Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. DC Breaks, Eva Lazarus - We Never Slow Down [RAM Records]

Recommended if you like: Loadstar, Friction, Kove
Artists more often than not undergo a transformation over time. Trying out new styles, sounds or genres even, just getting out of the comfort zone a bit. Some are able to apply their signature sounds to new styles, while some others are not as fortunate. DC Breaks is definitely a case of the former group.
The London-based duo Dan Havers and Chris Page has been active since around 2005, but their chapter is far from being Done or Closed. In fact, this year they started their 15-year anniversary project DCXV. A very Difficult-to-understand and Confusing name, since they are not even close to being 615 years in the game. Anyway. For this Delightful Celebration they gathered a whole bunch of new DC Breaks originals and remixes of Downright Classics from the likes of Technimatic and Skantia. Fun fact: One of these originals, Back For More, was used by Arsenal for their game recap!
Their newest entry in this series is a Dynamic Collaboration with rudegirl Eva Lazarus called We Never Slow Down, a most fitting title. Straight out the gate I have to mention just how fun the vocals are. The instrumental itself is already quite energetic, but Eva just gives the whole track so much more energy with her vocal performance. Will be a Direct Competitor with Enter The Warrior for most hype and fun vocals this year for me!
As some of you know, DC Breaks had started a collaborative project with Loadstar a few years ago called OPPOSITION. Apparently they had a whole album laid out, but had to scrap most of the Dear Cooperations, because the project was cancelled. All of it? Not quite! Turns out the instrumental for Never Slow Down is actually taken from OPPOSITION's track Higher. So there's still hope for the rest of the album, in one form or another!
Anyway, I'm very glad this instrumental got to see the light of day, because this is just such a good tune. Paired with the incredible Eva Lazarus it instantly became one of my favorites this year. Great stuff!
Okay I'm gonna take a break from all the DC puns now. A DC Break, if you will. Hehe. Some other dancefloor-y things that happened this week: - Fox Stevenson - All Eyes On Me - Rude Boy, Nami - Illusion (Mage Remix) - Annix, A Little Sound - Overload (I just count that as Dancefloor) - ReauBeau, Ekko & Sidetrack - Higher (Freaks & Geeks Remix) - Subsonic - Need Me - TREi - Space & Time / My Eyes - Droptek - Back 2 U - Idun Nicoline - Lost Without You (Boxplot Remix) - Ex Duty - Occulation - Exploid - Nobody Like You

2. Unknown Artist - Jungle Ride EP [Fokuz Recordings]

Recommended if you like: Macca & Loz Contreras, Lana Del Ray, Jorja Smith
Next up, we have my favorite new artist: Unknown Artist!
Yeah yeah, I know that's not actually their name. Every now and then dutch liquid powerhouse Fokuz Recordings contacts the producers of some of the best liquid bootlegs out there and releases the ones they get the permission for under the Unknown Artist moniker. For legal reasons, I guess. That's also how Edlan's bootleg of Need To Feel Loved, as heard in Pendulum's recent Spitbank Fort livestream, got to be released!
It's not always easy or even possible to find out who the "original" bootlegger was. For instance, the first track of this new Unknown Artist EP, Jungle, is definitely a bootleg of the original Wankelmut and Emma Louise track My Head Is A Jungle. But god knows who did the bootleg. In any case, whoever it is did a phenomenal job. It's such an incredibly melancholic vibe and my god do I love those. I've probably listened to it 50 times by now. Usually I would look the exact number of listens up on my account but apparently "Unknown Artist" tracks are not scrobbled. Sad times.
Speaking of melancholic: Next up we have a bootleg of Lana Del Ray - Ride, the queen of melancholy. As just a casual listener of Pop (i.e. only when I listen to radio and my phone is dead), I never expected her nostalgy-fueled gloomy vibes to work at a drum and bass tempo. The sad piano notes just makes the vibe complete. For this one I could actually find the artist, it's UK-based producer Macca!
Speaking of Macca, he and his partner in crime Loz Contreras are the creators another track on this EP: Blue Lights, a bootleg of Jorja Smith's track with the same name. I've said it after listening to High Contrast's Emmy-nominated remix of one of her tracks and I'll say it here too: We need more DnB tracks with Jorja Smith on the vocals. The dreamy vocals are complemented perfectly by Macca and Contreras' wonderful instrumental. Especially the breakdown in the middle of the track when Jorja's vocals are put front and centre is just perfect.
After all this melancholy Mr. Unknown Artist presents us with one last, more uplifting bootleg of NxWorries - Lyk Dis. I really don't know much about the artists involved in the original or the bootleg here, but one thing is for sure: It's fun as hell! A nice hiphop r&b vibe with some fun-sounding but in reality super sexual lyrics and some fast drums, what more do you even need?
All in all probably one of my favorite EPs of the year, which I honestly didn't expect before listening to it.
Some more liquid stuff that happened this week: - Brainwork - Had It All (just got on Spotify so I had to shout it out again) - Nu:Tone - Sweeter / Do It Right - Snse, Frankie Valli - Goodbyes (released last week, but only got around to it this week) - Bank - Breathless EP

3. The Clamps, Opsen - Illegal Instinct [Code Smell Music]

Recommended if you like: Burr Oak, Nais, Teddy Killerz
You know what this review thread needs? Some Neurofunk.
Good thing french neurofunk royalty The Clamps and Opsen have new music for us! What did you say? You don't know who they are? First of all, shame on you. Second of all, okay that was maybe a bit harsh, not everyone knows everyone. Let me introduce you.
The Clamps, also known as Julien Carbo (yes just one person), is not just very confusingly named, but more importantly also one of the most ridiculous neurofunk producers the scene has to offer. His first few releases as The Clamps were more Hardcore or Crossbreed oriented, but from 2015 on his productions went more into a drum and bass direction with releases on the french label Kosenprod and Prolix's Trendkill Records. He went on to release on labels like Mainframe, Titan Records and Eatbrain, to name a few. As a Toulousian himself, the Toulouse-based Kosenprod was still his home though. He went on to form a few side-projects you might have heard about, namely The Third Colony (for more atmospheric electronic stuff) and Burr Oak, a collaboration project with Opsen. Hey that's the other guy!
You might also know Opsen, a frenchman himself, from his work in the french neurofunk trio Signs. After four years of being signed with Signs, he resigned from the group, with all signs pointing to a solo career. Just like his fellow frenchman The Clamps he mostly released on Trendkill and Kosenprod in the following years. Additionally, he worked on a few collaborative efforts with ex-Signs member Le Lutin, as Cecil Hotel, and, you guessed it, with The Clamps as Burr Oak.
But this is no Burr Oak release, this is a double single with one track from them each. This is also not a release on Kosenprod or Trendkill, no no. This release is on the newly established label Code Smell Music. Even though it was founded just a few months ago by danish producer Bytecode, also known as one part of Instinkt, the young label has seen some promising releases so far. From Disphonia to Transforma to The Prophecy to, well, The Clamps and Opsen, they have proven to have quite great taste in what they shine a spotlight on.
Speaking of, let's talk about the actual release for a bit here. Opsen's track Global Instinct takes no prisoners at all, the brrr-per-minute meter is off the chart. As is becoming customary in new neurofunk releases, the breakdown switches over to a 4x4 beat that instantly makes me feel like I'm in a bunker in Berlin. The Clamps goes a similar route on Illegal. In typical Clamps fashion the song features variation upon variation in its drop that all try to top eachother with their ridiculousness. I love it. Halfway through the track the song also switches to a 4x4 beat, while a sample of an interview with 69db, also known as part of the Spiral Tribe crew, about electronic music of the 90s can be heard in the background. A nice nod to Julien's roots. After that it's back to straight tunage. Highly illegal indeed.
All in all, sick as hell.
Other happenings in the neurofunk world this week: - Tobax - Steinhagel VIP (was on Beatport earlier, but didn't get around to it yet) - Billain - Codename EP
And also deep/techy stuff: - IMANU - Fuji - Droptek - Devoid (Levela Remix) - DLR, Break - Hit The Target / NADS - Emperor - Rangefinder - GEST, Quadrant, Iris - Sequential - CELO - Learn To Fly / Break It - QUIX, Juelz - Chicane (Kumarion Remix)

4. Various Artists - Yo Bro LP [Drum Army]

Recommended if you like: Bredren, Was A Be, Rizzle or any of the 20+ featured artists
Breaking news: We have chosen a new Hidden Gems Of The Week™!
This week's pick is the Yo Bro compilation on the up-and-coming label Drum Army. This album is the third entry in the Yo Bro saga, also known as the best-named release series ever, after the Yo Bro EP and the Collab Bro collab EP in 2019. For those who don't know, Drum Army is a relatively new swiss label showcasing some of the best that the local, but also global, deep drum and bass scene has to offer. As is often the case with labels, Drum Army first started out as an event series way back in 2014 and only became a full-fledged label in 2017. Just one year later, they were already nominated as best newcomer label in the Drum & Bass Arena Awards. And that nomination didn't come out of nowhere. With releases from artists like Monrroe, OaT, Nemy or Invadhertz, they have certainly earned that high praise.
For this project they have reached out to artists from 8 different countries on three different continents, from insider tips like Smuskind or missledz to more established artists like Zombie Cats or Invadhertz. With that much diversity, you will certainly find something you like in there! Provided you like deep dnb at all, I guess. But even a good friend of mine who doesn't like that style of dnb at all found something in there they like, so who knows.
We (well, I) don't have all day for this so I'll quickly go through my four favorites:
First off, Smuskind. The german dnb duo have always been sort of my favorites on the label and to my delight they have contributed not just one but two tracks on this massive project. The first one is Bräd, a track full of weird whistle samples presented in a rhythm that is so catchy I honestly can't enough of it. The bounciness of it all makes it seem like they have listened to a lot Bass House tracks recently and I'm here for it. It's so bouncy in fact that even the protagonist of the music video is a big bouncy ball! The second track from Smuskind is a collaboration with Invadhertz called Ghosts and takes us into the deepest depths of the deep sea. I'm fairly certain this tune would cause an earthquake when played on a system.
Next up we have Felix Raymon, another german newcomer from the Ruhr area, presenting us his 2020 with Bomsh on vocal duty. The track is full of psytrance influences, from the occasional "bwoarm" in the background to the 4x4 rhythms during the verses of Bomsh, who's flow and voice gives me huge MC Mota vibes. Definitely one of the more unique tracks on the LP! Sidenote, check out Felix Raymon in general, he's one of my favorite underrated artists right now.
Last but not least there's Zombie Cats! Okay who am I kidding, they are not unknown at all. I'm just a huge fan okay? Their contribution Creatures is yet another sick roller with high production value everywhere. Honestly, they've pumped out a crazy amount of tracks this year (and it's not even over yet!) and they still manage to deliver consistently high quality. Best year ever for a Zombie Cats fan. This one even features a nice half-time drop in the second half, for all of you halftime lovers!
All in all, I give this LP Yo out of Bro stars. In other words, I love it.
Hidden Gems - Hydrae - CONSTANT EP - Archaea - System Malfunction / Can You Feel It - Ex Duty - Occulation - Embers Of Light - Everything Changes LP - Streetz Of Rage - Orbital Decay EP

As a souls veteran I don't think they're quite as difficult as they're cracked up to be but I have friends who can't get past the asylum demon. I wouldn't want to feel like I was forcing someone to play it but I need people to geek out with irl lol. I tell people it's much easier once you're familiar with the control scheme/ basic mechanics. Anything else I should mention?

2020.11.21 04:37 gingereno The World of Avowed - Eora; "Soul Essence, the Wheel, and Pillars of Adra" (Introduction to Animancy)

The World of Avowed - Eora;
A Pillar of 'Adra', pertinent to today's lore post
For those not in-the-know, Avowed is set in a fictional fantasy world called Eora. This fictional world is also the setting for two other Obsidian-made games: Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. These lore posts serve as a means for those unfamiliar with this world to become familiar, and for those already familiar to geek out. Today's lore is about Essence, otherwise known as the Soul, and all of the metaphysics that accompany it. I apologize in advance, this post is quite beefy. Save this post and come back to it to read it in chunks. OR...
[since each item in this post is deserving of its own dedicated write-up, this post will not be an exhaustive expose of all knowledge in these topics - the more nuanced lore will be given its own dedicate post later]

WARNING - MINOR spoilers for Pillars of Eternity in this post; MAJOR spoilers for Pillars II - WARNING
Your soul sitting across from a manifestation of the god Berath, in the In-Between
Soul plays a monumental part in Eora, the setting for Avowed. The main thrust of Pillars of Eternity's narrative focuses on Eora's soul mechanics and the implications of that.
What is soul in Eora? According to a forum post by Josh Sawyer (director, lead designer, and writer for Pillars of Eternity), a soul is "the essence of an individual's consciousness, memory, and personality". It's not unlike our contemporary understanding of the word soul. In the world of Eora, the souls of the people undergo what's called a cycle of rebirth (more on that further down), which is not unlike our modern understandings of reincarnation.
A \"laboratory\" for an Animancy experiment involving teleportation
One area in Eora that may differ from modern views on the soul is the soul's connection to a Kith body. The soul in Eora is a known quantity, rather than an item of belief or disbelief like in our own world. In Eora, it is a known and accepted truth of the soul's existence, and in fact the soul is even studied in an academic field known as Animancy. Animancy is the rigorous study of the soul ("essence"), by performing experiments and learning what could be called soul mechanics, citizens of Eora can peer into one of the most fundamental fabrics of reality.
Soulcraft, another name for animancy techniques, has been used to study a lot about the nature of the Eoran world. For one, animancers have learned that souls can actually be transferred and stored within other bodies or vessels. Using animancy you could peer into the past lives of a person's soul.
This can be useful for learning pieces of history or testing the 'purity' of one's soul, but the implications go further than that. Imagine if techniques could be developed to traverse a soul's "memory" and go back to the very beginning of a soul's creation - what would we see? Furthermore, what implications could there be in Eora if animancers could, say, create an artificial soul? Would it still be a "real" soul?
An Engwithan machine consumes soul energy from a Kith person
The soul's impact in the Eoran world is large; not just because of its impact in the field of animancy, but also on how different Kith will regard each other. Some factions require an individual to undergo a 'soul audit' upon applying to their ranks (checking to verify the 'purity' of their spiritual lineage). Animancy is used to perform tests such as these, or to address ailments of the soul. Having an ailment on your soul can lead to all sorts of complications, not the least of which being madness itself.

Saint Waidwen and his Raedceran army
In the first Pillars of Eternity game, the main point of the initial conflict in the game is a soul affliction known as Waidwen's Legacy. A soul affliction is exactly as it sounds, an affliction of the soul; a soul could be considered weak, or fractured, or ill - just like our physical forms. According to Josh Sawyer's quote on what the soul is in Eora, then a sick soul would result in the sickness of consciousness, memory, or personality. This is why madness is often the result of a sick or fractured soul.
For the aforementioned affliction, Waidwen's Legacy, the problem wasn't a sick soul, the problem was no soul at all. Children were being born without a soul; these individuals were referred to as Hollowborn. Hollowborn children were completely passive, they often stared blankly forward, neither speaking nor acknowledging the presence of others. One might've expected a soul-less child to act animalistic, but in Eora, this is not the case. The body of the "person" in question would just merely exist until they (it?) died (usually because the parents or guardians would cease to provide care).

Wichts, one of the outcomes from failed Animancy tests to cure Waidwen's Legacy
A soul seems to be what gives life to the body. However, without a body, the soul wanders aimless - untethered and directionless. In Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire we see many instances of souls standing and waiting in a "sea of grey" as some put it.
Normally, when a person dies in Eora their soul crosses from the material world through the Shroud into the realm of the gods known as Beyond, where they remain in the bosom of the deity their life closely associated with (or so that is taught). For example, a hunter who dies may find their soul resting with Galawain; or a master forge-worker may spend time in the Beyond with Abydon. A soul will remain with the deity for an indeterminate amount of time before being returned to Eora in a new body with new memories to form.
A person who becomes aware of their soul's previous lives is said to have their soul awakened. Those who have been awakened can experience the memories or sensations of previous lives, sometimes at great personal cost. Many awakening experiences can be cathartic, but the largest risk (by far) is the chance of madness that comes with being awakened. How difficult would it be to forget which life you are currently living if your soul is 're-living' its old lives?
There is a unique type of person in Eora who have a special ability to interact with others’ souls. These individuals are called Watchers. Your player character in Pillars of Eternity is one such person. Watchers can 'reach' into another person's soul and read their past lives as well. This great power, however, comes at a cost. All watchers are in danger of going completely mad if their soul is also awakened; their personality fragments into the personalities of their previous selves.
Engwithan machine associated with 'the Wheel'
What causes a soul to leave Beyond and re-enter Eora into a specific body at a specific place at a specific time - nobody knows. Though many theories have been posed. Could it be a divinely chosen life given to you by a deity? Is it karmic in nature - does our moral upstanding determine our next life? Is it random chance? Philosophers of Eora have posed many theories, none of which have come close to being solved.
What if, in Avowed*, we got a clue as to the purpose of this constant state of death and rebirth?
Speaking of which, this "cycle of rebirth" we're alluding to... it has a name; it's referred to as The Wheel.

"THE WHEEL OF BERATH SPINS endlessly, passing the souls of the vanquished through pillars of adra, the veins of the world, and giving them new life when they emerge again. With every journey’s completion, another unfurls. With every danger averted, a new calamity looms. This is the world of Eora, where all life begins and ends at the Pillars of Eternity." - CLOSING REMARKS ON PILLARS OF ETERNITY COLLECTORS BOOK
The Wheel is the natural phenomenon that occurs in Eora's metaphysical nature. When one references the Wheel they are referencing the cycle of rebirth that occurs for souls. The process of the body dying, thus releasing the soul, and the soul residing with the gods until it returns to Eora in a new body. This process is also referred to as the turning of the Wheel. For years and years, thinkers and philosophers of Eora have wondered as to the purpose of this natural cycle, or what brought it into existence. [What speculation can you offer: what is the purpose of this reincarnation cycle? What is its origin?]
No, not this kind of wheel...
Since Berath is the deity of death and life (as a cycle) the Wheel is also called Berath's Wheel, and indeed she is in charge of it. Unknown to Kith on Eora, however, is that the Wheel is also the means by which the gods receive their power. The Wheel takes in Kith souls and the turning of the Wheel creates the energy the gods "feed" on. Think of it in the imagery of a water-wheel in a creek. The water is the flowing of souls which push the wheel, generating the energy output. This is all metaphorical of course, as the gods and the Wheel don't necessarily occupy physical space. Well, sort of...
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR PILLARS OF ETERNITY II: DEADFIREWe learn at the end of Pillars of Eternity II that the Wheel is not just a metaphysical phenomenon, but also a physical device. Hidden in the lost city of Ukaizo is an ancient Engwithan machine which diverts souls entering into the Wheel to the gods, so that they may be powered. It is discovered that the process of the Wheel has been (as far as we know) a constant presence in Eora since history past. This machine, however, has altered the completely natural process. Unfortunately due to the creation of this machine doing the 'work' of the Wheel, the natural aspect of this process (the cycle of rebirth) has become reliant on the machine itself. When Eothas destroys the Wheel at the end of Pillars of Eternity II we don't know what will ultimately become of the world afterward. What do you think will happen?

A possible metaphor for 'the Wheel' in Eoran metaphysics
As for how the Wheel operates, there are many theories, though none have been confirmed by citizens of Eora. Some animancers and philosophers hypothesize that the gods actually reside at the centre of Eora, and that the Adra Pillars (large towering pieces of radiant green stone that permeates the world of Eora) extend into the very centre of Eora itself, and because of Adra's known soul-conductivity, this is often believed to be true.
But wait, what are these Adra Pillars? ...

Pillars of Adra
Adra is a naturally occurring material found in all of Eora. It takes on a crystalline shape. Often pillars of adra are seen protruding from beneath the earth. Excavations of sites where these adra pillars show them descending deep into Eoran soil. Nobody has been able to confirm just how far down they extend, as the level of technology has not reached that point yet (by the time of Pillars of Eternity, anyway). An accepted theorem about adra is that all the organic adra in Eora is interconnected, meaning there is really only one piece of adra in all of Eora that connects throughout the entire world deep below the surface level of the planet.
Adra is more than just a unique looking crystal to be found in Eora, it also holds a unique quality in regards to the soul (I mean, otherwise why would it be in a lore post on The Soul). Adra has been discovered to have high conductivity for souls. This means that souls easily pass into and through Adra, much like electricity through water. This is what drives the theory that when a Kith dies its soul passes into the nearest adra pillar and travels downward into Eora's centre where presumably the gods reside. The soul would then reside with the gods for a time before traveling up the adra again and returning to a new body. This is, however, merely conjecture at this point.

Devil of Caroc
Using a mixture of adra and copper banding, Animancers have been able to bind souls to objects. In fact, the Devil of Caroc (a companion from Pillars of Eternity) is a Kith soul housed within a copper automaton.
Adra is surprisingly easy to carve and manipulate and is only classified as semi-precious. Still, because of its unique nature, it is highly prized by jewelers, who often take extra care in their work with adra.
Not all adra is equal, however. In certain parts of Eora, there is a unique form of adra known as Luminous Adra. At first, to individuals, Luminous adra appeared just as regular adra, but with a more ethereal glow to it. It hasn't been until recent times that people have discovered its tremendous power. Luminous adra differs from regular adra in terms of its capacity to hold souls.
Luminous Adra pillars in an underground sanctum
"A single shard could hold as much power as a wagon loaded with regular adra" (Pillars Wiki: Adra - Luminous Adra). Luminous adra became highly sought after as animancy continued to progress in different Eoran cultures. In our real world, Earth, the discovery of luminous adra's potential is analogous to the creation of the transistor, which dramatically increased our potential to store information digitally - thus creating our modern computerized age. Back to Eora: due to luminous adra's ability to be an even more efficient conduit for souls some intellectuals in the Deadfire Archipelago have been experimenting with using luminous adra as a means to travel instantly between locations where luminous adra is present, essentially created a teleportation transportation system.
This is not all luminous adra is known for: when distilled into a liquid form is becomes a powerful potion which restores vitality. For this reason luminous adra is also a commercial commodity, not just an intellectual one.

Are the letters made of adra???
We obviously don't know yet what importance the soul, the wheel, animancy, or pillars of adra will have on the narrative experience of Avowed. However, a large part of what makes Eora unique revolves around these topics, and Obsidian has gone to great lengths to define their unique fantasy setting with these characteristics.
As a result, we will undoubtedly be interacting with these ideas in the game of Avowed. Our player character will have a soul that has past lives (although, wouldn't it be interesting if that was the twist of your character - that you \didn't* have a past life), animancy *will be a hot-button issue, and you may face the Wheel multiple times in your playthrough (depending on your difficulty, lol).
I would love to see our soul's past lives be part of the character creation process. Further, what implications of these topics could we draw for Avowed; could we suffer from soul afflictions in-game? Can we mine/harvest adra to forge weapons and armor? If so, can we capture souls for our own gain? Can our characters play as specialists in animancy? If we are a Watcher, does that mean we could have a game mechanic which allows us to experience another soul's past lives/memories?
Are these adra the 'roots' of the adra pillars?
As well, some of the mysteries involved in Eora's metaphysics still need to be unraveled. What brought about these souls, and what started the process known as the Wheel? Is there a purpose to it at all? Do the gods have an endgame? and WHAT THE HELL IS RYMRGAND? I pray Wael will bless the game's development in the hope that some of these mysteries are alluded to in Avowed.

Souls hangin' out
In Eora the soul plays a massive part in the world's metaphysical mechanics. Unlike our own world where the soul is more of a matter of faith/belief; in Eora, the soul is a known and manipulatable quantity. The soul is known to engage in a cycle of rebirth (not unlike our idea of reincarnation) where when one's body dies the soul leaves the body and returns later in a new body. This naturally-occuring process is known as the Wheel; a process which siphons soul energy to power the gods of Eora.
The soul is able to be manipulated through an academic field known as animancy, which aims to learn about the soul from a scientific perspective. Animancy has been successful in storing and transferring souls, as well as reading past lives souls have lived. Through the use of an organic crystalline material known as adra, which acts as a conduit for souls, animancers perform experiments - discovering the use of adra combined with copper in the study of manipulating the soul. More recently a unique form of adra, called luminous adra, has been sought by intellectuals and entrepreneurs for its high capacity in storing large amounts of souls.
Avowed will undoubtedly have a lot of interactions with these world mechanics. To put it plainly, if Avowed were to lack these soul-based influences in the game, then it would cease to be a game set in Eora. I don't say that from the point of personal criticism, I mean that the world of Eora, which Obsidian Entertainment has built, is interlocked with these aspects of the soul. Our player character will be in a world where soulcraft is a real and pervasive element of the world's narrative. Our player character will have a soul that lived previous lives before the game's story.
In Avowed*, how will our player character's previous lives affect our gameplay? Will part of our character creation process include selecting a backstory for our soul? Will we have access to soul-based powers?*

2020.11.19 23:03 Orpherischt The Basic

In the prime number cipher:
Many of you will have heard of Event 201, which informed us about the coming 'Coronavirus pandemic'.
Rambling Context:
I first began looking into the number 1933 (and thus also 933) because of this novel, published in that year (of which I have a very yellowed 1930's print edition)...
The novel has the frame story that it is a record of a series of dreams by a UN politician, which were confided to the 'author'. The entire book is written as a history book for the school student of 2106 AD, explaining the fall of our current civilization and how our future (and their current) Utopia was built. Critics go to lengths to discredit the various 'predictions' made but in general, there is a thematic arch that is nonetheless perhaps worth paying attention to (ie. exact dates are not really relevant, but the sequence is - it's the changes in the society, and the forces causing them, and in what order, that are perhaps more important - worth paying attention to as political lessons, if not as some form of prophecy or predictive programming, which cannot be discounted).
I have read the Shape of Things to Come twice, both times years ago. After my first read-through, I was impressed and entirely depressed, coming to reflect anew upon the dismal state of affairs in our own time. That things could be fixed if we could just do ... this or that.
A few years later, reading it again, I had a totally different impression. I was horrified at the Grand Presumption that Scientific Order claimed for itself as Shepherd of Man - not so much in the abstract - but because of the inevitable corruption that stains all valorous abstractions. No centrally powerful priesthood can be trusted, until man is perfected - which of course, is the overarching theme of the novel.
I might have to go through it again to see how my perspective might have shifted since the last reading.
Anyway, of the novel ('Europe' can imply all of 'western civilization', and perhaps might represent the entire world), wikipedia has:
A long economic slump causes a major war that leaves Europe devastated and threatened by plague. The nations with the strongest air-forces set up a benevolent dictatorship that paves the way for world peace by abolishing national divisions, enforcing the English language, promoting scientific learning and outlawing religion. The enlightened world-citizens are able to depose the dictators peacefully, and go on to breed a new race of super-talents, able to maintain a permanent utopia.

Wells' predicted war ends with no victor but total exhaustion, collapse and disintegration of all the fighting states and of the neutral countries, which are equally affected by the deepening economic crisis. The whole world descends into chaos: nearly all governments break down, and a devastating plague in 1956 and 1957 kills a large part of humanity and almost destroys civilization.
Wells then envisages a benevolent dictatorship, "The Dictatorship of the Air", which arises from the controllers of the world's surviving transport systems, who are the only people with global power. The dictatorship promotes science, enforces Basic English as a global lingua franca and eradicates all religions, setting the world on the road to a peaceful utopia. When the dictatorship chooses to execute a subject, the condemned person is given a chance to take a poison tablet (modelled on the Hemlock given to Socrates).
  • "Dictatorship of the Air" = "A Novel Coronavirus" = 224 alphabetic
The achievement of a classless society is not via a Marxist Dictatorship of the Proletariat, an idea that Wells completely rejected. Rather, the working class is massively "pulled upwards" and completely eliminated in several generations of intensive upward social mobility, in effect leaving a humanity entirely composed of "middle class intellectuals". The limited amount of physical labor still needed is performed by the world's youths, who undergo two years of "labor conscription" instead of military conscription, which is no longer needed.

Eventually, after about 100 years of reshaping humanity, the Dictatorship of the Air is overthrown in a completely-bloodless coup, the former rulers are sent into honourable retirement and the world state "withers away". The last part of the book is a detailed description of the utopian world that emerges. The ultimate aim of this utopian world is to produce a world society composed entirely of polymaths, every one of its members being the intellectual equal of the greatest geniuses of the past.

The Meat of the Matter:
The main reason for this thread is the notion of the 'enforcing of Basic English'. Of course, this has happened already, for a large portion of the world, in terms of much day-to-day commerce. English is the international language of worldwide Air Traffic Control. The 26-letter English-Latin alphabet is used, with little modification, by those writing many other languages.

I make that modification because of its changed semantics, and to reference the key number 108, and because I was conceived in 1980, and born the next year.

0. Zero.Nothing.Circle.Zero.Cipher.Corona.Everything.Circle.Zero (@ Nero @ Eroz @ Eros)
1. Language is an Enigma (Machine). 'A' is a Key. Either you have a Point, or you don't.
2. Language is a Transmission of Enigmatic Spells, encoding Ideas. There are many 'Languages', but they are Dividing Branches rooted in The One Tree of Language. Division is a Key. Division is a Math-thematical Operation, and the Operation is the Great Work. Division is the trickiest of the basic algebraic procedures. The Monad divides into the Dyad, yet the Monad, or it's Concept, remains. Two hands (or Wings) work better than One. Animals onto the Archive two-by-two. Duality is a Duel that Ties. Breaking News: To Be or not, is a Key. Two Points implies a Vector: a Direction. The Vector has a Direction. The Victor has an Objective. One walks the Beaten Path, or strays, which may or may not be to go astray.
3. There are ostensibly Practical Ideas (needs, desires, dangers, general denotion of objects) and Abstract Ideas (futures, pasts, times, organisms, systems, numbers, symbols, relationships, metaphors). Sometimes the Practical is used to refer to the Ideal, and vise versa. While you might have a single Definition or understanding of a Word, others might have more, and imply them in their works, and if you blink, you just might miss them. ABC is a Key. Trilogy, Trinity and Threesome are Three Keys. Fire and Water. Air and Earth. The Triangle is a Pyramid viewed from one side. The Triangle is A First Surface. It is a Field, Bounded, like a Circle or Sphere, which are themselves expanded Points. Know Family is a Key. Families are made by Spelling.
4. In commonly-known lore, Spells are Magic Enigmas, cast by Gods, Wizards and Witches, characters associated with wisdom, intelligence and guile. Characters that are never 'arbitrary', but rather 'nice' (in the obsolete sense of the word). How many Corners hath the Earth? ABCD is a Key: The Door Deletes Memory. The Cube in which you sit is a Key. Who are you sitting there For?
5. The Spells (ie. words in the Dictionary and the Saurus) were made and then formalized by a God, Wizard or Witch. It is likely they contain niceties. Most people cast spells unwittingly. Mages cast them knowingly. There is no Fairy Tale, and no Fantasy, if there is no Spell of some kind. Spells are Elemental, and thus Particular. 'V' is a Key, reflecting 'Λ', and these dualities of the Sounds of El. Quintessence. The Blazing Star. Five is a Key.
6. The Lexicon might be a Dark Crystal of information in more metaphorical ways than one. The Enigmatic Crystal is perhaps partly broken down, or shattered. The cracks might be found in the division between French and German, or between English and Russian, or between the dialects of Khoe and Hebrew, between Fire and Water, and between Earth and Air. The cracks are how the light gets in [see the splintering of the geometric tongues reflected in the film Arrival]. The word 'crack' is the word 'church' in disguise (and this sort of fluid linguistic transformation - a liquid wordplay - is a Key to the Language of the Birds). The church is built upon, or within, a Rock. A small Rock is a Stone, or the Isopsephic Pebble of the Philosopher.
7. There are perhaps Key Ideas.
8. Key Ideas are likely to be those things that most Awed the Creator of the Enigma: that prompted the Creation of the Enigma in the First Place. And it is likely that these Keys are those used to unlock it - or to align it (or the Perceiver) so that it's Contents might be correctly perceived. Fine Optics requires Precision Geometry. Curves are Angelic Keys. Time Stops if you turn the Hourglass on it's side. Do not Cross the Beams. Do as I say, and not as I do. Do something.
9. The 'Manuscript', and in particular, 'The Illuminated Manuscript', is a Key. The 'Light' of the 'Illumination' is a literal and figurative wordplay, as is the closely related key, 'The Book' (and it's Pages, and it's Letters, it's Contents, and it's Index). Illuminated Letters. Letters of Light. The opposite of Light is Shade. The Shadow is a Key. The Gnomon, or Gnome, projects a Shadow in order to Measure the Geometry of the Light. You are made of Light, yet you are invisible in the Dark. Though you are of Light, you have Darkness in You. If the Enigma reflects you, or if you are of it's Pattern, then so it is with the Enigma. The Brightest Flame burns quickest. The Dark is that which is In Umber.
10. Words (spells) contain Alphanumeric Spectra (ie. Specter, the Digital Ghost in the Machine). That is, they contain enciphered Numbers (data points, or da'at pints). The Number is The Key. These numbers are implicit. They have not been 'assigned' to the Letters in the Alphabet, but rather, the Act of standardizing the Alphabetic Order conjures the Cyphers (Sefers, Serifs, Seraphs, Surfers) into existence. Either you acknowledge them or you do not. Either you see the potential that these numeric spectrum could have been intentionally constructed by act of letter choice, or you do not. The Tetractys is a Key.
11. The Spectrum of a Spell is the set of numbers extracted from a set of cyphers. I argue that those most obvious and intuitive cyphers are the ones that deserve the most investigation, and the more obfuscated and twisted the cipher mapping, the less likely investigation will lead to results (with the caveat of the Theory of Totality - that indeed, the Lexicon is the Monolith and a Deific Mind Map, with information to be extracted no matter the angle of incidence). In selecting cyphers to observe, we consider again the Mind of the Architect of the Enigma. What would interest IT? ... Prime numbers are Prime. They are Primary. They are the Singletons, the Black Holes, the Gods or Titans of numbers. Obviously, a Wizard will prefer them, or at least revere them. The Division of Odd and Even is a Key. Those Numbers that implicitly denote constructive Geometry, like the Triangular numbers and the Squares, and the Hexes, and the Stars, etc. will likely be leveraged as Elemental Tools. The Wizard in Dungeons & Dragons has a Spell-component Pouch (itself a metaphor). 'The Master' is a Key.
12. Knights of the Round Table. 12 Disciples. 12 Labours. 12 Hours in a half-day. Time is Key, and Counting Times is Key, and Counting is The Key. Adding is a Key, as is the Adder. The Total is a Key, as is the Summit. The Speech is a Key, as is the Peak of the Mound of Spice. The Oral History is itself it's own Key. Mythology and Legendarium, and Religious Icons are Keys. Old Canon catch-phrases are Inceptions. The Circle is a Key.
13. The word Lucky <--- Luce / Luke <--- Luccifer <-- Light-bearer <-- Illuminator
14. Accept Death, but do not dwell on it. Nonetheless, Death is a Key. Unlearn what you have Learned, but Remember all of it.
15. The Yin-Yang is a Key. Opposites Oppose, and Opposites Attract. As-above-so-below. If in doubt, Revolve. There will be Drama. There will be Trauma. There will be Dreams. There will be Drums. Find the Light in the Dark. Be the Light in the Dark - a Derk of the Light. The Torque of the Vortex. Speech is a Hurricane, if you are small enough. The Selfish Occultist Hides, while the Occultist Mentor Reveals by making a Show of Hiding. A Teacher shows what he or she Knows - but some would say that Knowledge cometh through Trial only.
16. Innuendo is Eternal. He or She that casts Spells is a Cunning Linguist. The Language Enigma is better understood when one sees that the Ocean of Language is Naughty Tickle. The Best Parts are Hidden, as are the Scariest ones.
...18. What came first - the Chicken or the Egg? As it is with Metaphor.
...19. At any particular Time, to avoid Chaos, some things are (Generally) Forbidden. Reflections are not the Thing Reflected, except when they are.
...20. Zero is the Sigil of the Cipher itself. Adding Zeros is to add 'Encipherment'. It also Magnifies, which is to pull the Eye toward it. Numbers with Magnifying Zeroes are simultaneously stronger and weaker than the reduced form of the number (ie. 20 vs 200 vs 2)
...21. Pirate Jokes are Keys.
...22. Think like the Architect, in order to understand the justifications for his Magnum Opus. If you don't know how he thinks, it might be worthwhile exercise to try and discover it.
...23. The Enigma is a Key.
...24. Thrones. Hours. Watches. Each Hour a Gate and a Passage. The Ritual is an Operation in Time, as is Music. The Liturgy is a Key, as is the Missal.
...25. Two sets of Five fingers on Each Hand. The Power is in your Hands, if you are a Labourer. Snarky comments are unbecoming. Mockery is everywhere. Sometimes it works to your betterment. Sometimes it breaks you down with no intention of building you up again.
...26. There are this many Letters in the English-Latin Alphabet. The World of Words is a Key. How many Letters does it take to make a Logos?
...28. The Mage might have Numbers he actively avoids, driven perhaps by superstition and unreasonable paranoia. Twenty-eight is the second Perfect Number, after Six. The Moon is a Key.
...29. Some numbers will remain Invisible and Opaque to the Magus, until he or she makes a concerted effort to work with them. The Blind Spot is a Key.
...30. Fear not. Be aware. The Fool, or the Zeroth, hath no Value, and yet is oft the most valuable Card. The Card is a Key.

2020.11.18 10:56 kchloye [REQUEST] Cards for partner's birthday [U.S]

Hi - I wanted to come on here and ask for some cards to make my partners birthday really special. I hope this is allowed.
For context, this year is so difficult for me financially; my accounts are all in the negative and my credit card is maxed out. I had to give up my car as well and moved back home after I was laid off from COVID. I haven’t been able to find work since, and my mental health has taken an absolute nosedive. After I overstayed my welcome at home (I have a good relationship with my family, there was just no room and the couch wasn’t doing it, and they are also very poor), my boyfriend offered to let me move into him and his family’s home. Ever since I’ve been here, he’s helped me find side work and jobs to help get by and has supported me emotionally in ways no one ever has before. I have severe OCD and anxiety disorder and with the pandemic & getting laid off & losing my stable routine, it’s been so much worse. I often can’t get out of bed most days from severe panic attacks and have trouble eating/keeping any food down. He helps me by calming me down when needed, makes the room cozy, encourages me to get up and eat, shower, get dressed, taking daily walks, etc. He also struggles with depression and anxiety but is not at the level I am, and is incredibly helpful with keeping me afloat. Basically, he is my whole world and more, and I want to show him this year on his birthday how appreciative of him I am.
Problem is, I have absolutely not a single cent. I want to do something special and I’m not that creative when it comes to gifts. I know that he is a big big fan of personalized cards, and has every single one of his birthday cards given to him throughout the years saved. He's also been feeling pretty alone lately with the isolation of COVID, and to hear happy birthday from people around the country or world would be such a special experience to provide him with. His birthday is December 2nd, although if cards came in later than that, it would still be amazing.
A little information about him for card ideas: he’s a big geek. He produces music for a living (just enough to get by, musicians aren’t paid well at all lol). He loves gaming and although I’m not super savvy with that stuff, I’ve observed him a lot and know that his favorite games are Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Pokémon Emerald, Super Smash Bros. Melee (UCF) (he plays this competitively), Bioshock 2, Runescape (2007), Halo 3, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Spyro the Dragon. He’s insanely excited for the Cyberpunk 2077 release and watches videos on it constantly. He’s also the worlds BIGGEST Star Wars nerd. Huge huge Anakin Skywalker and Kylo Ren fan. Also loves The Mandalorian which we’ve been watching together. Other things include streetwear, anime, cars, his cats.... If I think of any more or if anyone has questions, I’ll add them in the comments.
Thank you all in advance and I really look forward to hearing if this is a possibility for anyone. I just want him to feel absolutely smothered in love and appreciated because he deserves nothing but the best. Just need a little help getting there. Appreciate it so so much! ❤️

2020.11.15 04:39 gingereno The World of Avowed - Eora; "Galawain, the Seeker god"

The World of Avowed - Eora;
POTENTIAL CONNECTION TO AVOWED's REVEAL TRAILER IN TODAY'S LORE POST. Check out that section at the bottom of the post.
For those not in-the-know, Avowed takes place in a fictional fantasy setting known as Eora. This fictional world is also the setting for two Obsidian-made games: Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. These lore posts serve to familiarize those unfamiliar with Eora as a means of gearing up for the release of Avowed, as well as giving us a more nuanced understanding of the game's world upon release. As well for those already familiar with the World of Eternity, it serves as a means to geek out! Today's lore: Galawain, the Clever Hound.

WARNING - Minor spoilers for Pillars of Eternity ahead - WARNING

ten of the eleven gods of Eora (Galawain is fourth from the left)
Many fantasy settings typically have deities included in their creation. The world for Avowed - Eora, is no different. In Eora, we see a pantheon of eleven different gods: Abydon, Berath, Eothas, Galawain, Hylea, Magran, Ondra, Rymrgand, Skaen, Wael, and Woedica. Each one of these gods is the living embodiment of a set of ideals. As discussed in the lore post about Abydon, his patronage as the god of preservation (likely) drove him to intervene in Ondra's attempt to exterminate an ancient society of peoples known as the Engwithans. For more information on these gods (as an overview) check out my previous lore post or better yet: try out the games Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, both of which are Obsidian original games.
That is all.

GALAWAIN (gah-lah-wayn)
Galawain in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, with his accompanied wolf and staelgar beats
Galawain, the patron of "the hunt in all its forms", is also referred to as Lord of the Hunt, Father of Monsters, and The Changeling. Galawain is the god of Pursuit, discovery, perseverance, the hunt, assassins, predatory beasts, and wilderness. He has a quasi-religious group of followers who call themselves the Hounds of Galawain, though Galawain himself does not have a cult-like we see with Wael and his 'Hand Occult'.
Galawain offers fealty to the god Woedica, recognizing her authority (though he does not always follow her commands). We do not learn his official dispositions in the Pillars of Eternity games, though we could imagine Galawain would favour aggression, cleverness, and rational. If our character in Avowed can become a follower of Galawain you may gain boons to your character's abilities by following in his favoured dispositions - abilities I'm sure would be honoring to the patron god of the hunt. What dispositions do you see Galawain favouring?
A Staelgar, a feline predator often associated with Galawain
It is of no surprise that Galawain is considered the protector of wild places, as well as the creator of many a predator and prey. Often Galawain is responsible for the creation of new beasts and predators. Often souls of his devotees stay with him after life in the form of one of his beasts. Though sometimes he will use a faithful's soul to create a new predator, often the form of which takes inspiration from the soul itself (I wonder what soul inspired the creation of a dragon...if indeed Galawain made them). He greatly delights in creatures making the transition from prey to predator, and values overcoming the struggle of the hunt and of survival. For this reason, he has an uneasy friendship with Magran, who also values trials in life.

Galawain concept art of him in his 'Changeling' form
Individuals who follow the Seeker God hold titles like frontiersmen, constables, treasure seekers, explorers, and even scholars. It may be surprising to see a scholar as considered a follower of the Lord of the Hunt. However, one important distinction one must make is to recognize that the hunt, surviving the wilderness, and overcoming struggles are the strongest manifestations of Galawain's ideals. As the deity of pursuit and discovery, anyone who follows in these paths is at least near to Galawain, even if they are not praising him. In the "scripture" of Galawain, Book of the Hunt, a teacher of the 'way of Galawain' writes:
The Seeker God is easy to understand if one actively engages in the quest for knowledge, but his secrets are self-occluding to those who merely ask, desiring knowledge without the requisite hunt. My own flesh and blood once asked me, "Will learning to hunt please Galawain?" I told him yes but added, "Galawain would prefer that you hunt to learn.
Could our Avowed characters expect struggle within the game if we follow Galawain - or oppose him?
Portait for a female nature godlike
Godlikes (Kith born "blessed" by a deity, taking on their image) of Galawain are referred to as Nature Godlikes within the Pillars of Eternity games, and they are available as a playable race to your player character. Therefore, it's likely we may see Nature Godlike as a playable subrace in Avowed. Nature Godlikes exist in the form of their parental race (folk (human), elf, dwarf, orlan, aumaua) but mixed with animalistic features. A nature godlike may have features such as horns or antlers, have long cervine-like ears. Their skin varies, is commonly greenish-brown in color and covered in moss, bark, or fungi. The special abilities of a nature godlike in-game give them buffs to their attributes when below a certain level of health.

SYMBOL FOR THE GODDESS, 'WOEDICA' (can you spot this in the Avowed reveal trailer?)
Admittedly, there is little we know about the history of Galawain. At most all we know is that Galawain often would be considered as a 'divine enforcer' and that when Woedica ruled the gods, he would act on her behalf. Sometimes "destroying a hapless individual...or in some cases an entire mortal city" (Pillars of Eternity Collectors Book, pg 23). Though in "recent" history he has ceased to fill this role, though there is speculation that he could begin again. Could a major conflict of Avowed involve Galawain seeing the will of Woedica executed?

The in-game book that serves as a form of scripture for followers of Galawain is the aforementioned "Book of the Hunt". In it, we read the thoughts of a teacher musing on his students' attitudes toward the way of Galawain. He starts the book by stating that students who ask him to teach them the way of Galawain have already failed in Galawains eyes. He continues:
"Does one ask a deer to present itself as dinner? Of course not - one must outwit, outmaneuver, and overpower the deer if one dreams of venison. So it is with the Seeker God - to ask a question is weakness and idle indecision, to seek answers is to understand, and to become one with Galawain. Survival begins with strength from within."
You do not follow/serve Galawain in the asking of the question but in the pursuit of its answer.
As a personal comment, one could argue that asking someone a question could be, in itself, a form of pursuit. Therefore not all questions would be counter to Galawain's ways.

In Pillars of Eternity, there is a quest you can take on called The Old Queen and the New King. In this quest, you are sent (by Galawain) to a nearby temple of his, Galawain's Maw, a stone-made temple in the shape of a large wolf's head. The Fangs, a radical "tribe" of followers of Galawain find themselves in the middle of a dilemma - do they side with the Old Queen or the New King.
The Old Queen, Sul, in her den
The Old Queen, Sul, is a giant lioness who currently holds the title of champion for the Fangs. A challenger to the title, Oernos, a giant bear, beckons Sul to come out and fight. The lioness, however, chooses to remain in her den (though not necessarily out of fear, but of tact). The Fangs are split on who to side with. Should Sul embrace the fight with Oernos and fight in the open, on equal footing with the giant bear, as a testament to Galawain's ways; or should Oernos, the giant bear, challenge Sul, the lioness champion, in her territory - overcoming struggle and adversity in the way of Galawain. Both sides have merit in the ideals of Galawain, but they cannot stay in a stalemate forever. For if no struggle occurs, if a predator is not made a prey, then that is the ultimate failure to Galawain. To refuse to end this conflict will be to choose to live faithlessly in Galawain's eyes.
If Sul, the lioness, fights Oernos, the great bear, in the open she (and her cubs) will likely die. Oernos is much more powerful and youthful than she. However, if Oernos is unwilling to enter into the fray of facing Sul where she lay, then Oernos is trying to dictate the terms of the fight - he must face Sul in the conditions he is given. However, if he does so, she will have such an advantage that he (and his young) will surely be slain.
What do you think? What should happen? Play the game to discover what happens, or leave a comment below on your thoughts/opinions.

In the reveal trailer for Avowed, debuted at Xbox Games Showcase on July 23, 2020 there is a moment where we maybe get a glimpse of a statue of Galawain. At time 0:25 we see a statue of a figure which looks much like one of Galawain's manifestations - the Changeling.
When Galawain appears in Eora as the Changeling he is almost always described the same way: "a broad-shouldered man with shaggy hair and beard, nut-brown skin, and some animal traits (e.g., pointed, hairy ears like an orlan’s and sharp canine teeth). As the Changeling, he is almost always accompanied by his pack—a fearsome assortment of predatory beasts". What we see in the reveal trailer may be Galawain.
Left: Avowed reveal trailer at 0:25; Right: concept art of Galawain
When you compare the image of Galawain with his concept art, there are some similarities in aesthetics. The statue certainly is depicted in the form of a broad-shouldered man and is accompanied by a wolf - an animal seen often in the Galawain theology. Furthermore, the stone-cut 'sleeveless garb' on the statue is consistent with Galawain's Changeling manifestation. However, there are a couple of key factors that may bring doubt to the statue being Galawain (which in itself is interesting to know).
Why might this statue not be Galawain. Well for starters the statue doesn't appear to have any notable animalistic features. As well we don't have a lot of imagery depicting Galawain with a sword. That doesn't necessarily mean this isn't a Galawain statue, but it doesn't match the imagery or aesthetics that we have seen up to this time. Lastly, Galawain's Changeling form is usually accompanied by more beasts than we see here. While we do see concept art of Galawain with a wolf to his left (like in the reveal trailer), we do not see the bear or the staelgar. As well, while a wolf may be typical symbology for Galawain's followers, it is also reasonable to conclude it would be a common symbol seen in many other cultures.
What do you think, is this statue of Galawain, or not? Leave a comment below.

That's all I have on Galawain for now. There is, obviously, more that could be written about Galawain, but I leave some details in the Pillars of Eternity games veiled so you may enjoy their discovery - something Galawain would be pleased with, I imagine. With the closing of this post on the Lord of the Hunt, I pose you this question: what "hunt" are you currently beholden to? A valuable question for authentic role-play in the upcoming game, Avowed, but also for life as well.

THANKS! I hope this added value to your hype for Avowed and deepened your understanding of the Pillars of Eternity games. Leave a comment below or message me directly for any questions or suggestions on future posts :)

2020.11.13 05:41 sirlaffsalot47 On Sight is one of the purest, fully realized, groundbreaking artistic expressions of all time

My God I know this song gets enough worthy praise all of the time on this sub but it's so, so, so fucking good bro. Here's me geeking out on the song for a few bullet points:
-Obviously it's proximity to MBDTF as the first sound we hear from a solo Kanye album in three years. That opening sound gnashes, thrashes, pulls, grips, and punches the listener and it's Kanye gripping back onto whatever artistic expression he effing wants, no more applying to what people expect from him.
-The sample break at 1:17 where everything Kanye fans think they want is just out of reach: that old Kanye, the soul sample Kanye, but it's just a big middle finger back as we let the artist take back track what he knows is the future.
-The outro just keeps going it doesn't fade out into some loud flourish like Bound 2's eventual climax, no that sound is gutteral and loud and you're gonna keep listening to it.
-The lyrics are the most in your face they've ever been. I will never not love that Parkinson's line because of how politically incorrect that would get destroyed in 2020. Fuck, man, Yeezus came out right in the time it needed to.
God tier song bro. Top 10 Kanye, top 5 maybe for what it represents at that point in his career.

2020.11.12 02:10 DayFirst I'm here to steal your ideas (Community-Driven Expansion)

One of my favorite memories from SC2 was geeking out over all the new units, abilities, and upgrades that came in the HotS and LotV expansions. My heart and soul yearn to feel like that again.
Luckily, Blizzard made it fairly easy to do the work ourselves. I've made a few extension mods that custom units to the vanilla roster, and (more talented) people have even made custom races. I've begun work on an extension mod that seeks to emulate the sprinkling of new units, upgrades, and abilities that the expansions gave while maintaining balance. For now, I'm going to limit it to one upgrade, ability, and unit per race.
Unfortunately, I'm only a Platinum League boy so I don't know very much about balance (I play random though, so I'm unbiased). I'd like to ask for ideas, especially from people in higher leagues (so I can potentially steal them).
What is an unfulfilled niche that a new unit could fill in each race? What are some upgrades or abilities that could make units more viable in certain scenarios?
For example, I feel like Zerg needs a more flexible anti-air unit against Protoss (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, I feel like a reaper upgrade could give the unit a use in the mid or late game.

Critic Reviews

Destructoid - Chris Carter - 7 / 10
It's a shame this had to be $70 out of the gate on PS5 (it's $59.99 on PC) and that it has to be tethered to an always-online system. Whoever made that decision doomed this project's reputation, at least in the short term. Godfall is going to go down as one of the most divisive games of this generation's launch: a relic to some, a wild whispered-about gem to others. Make sure that before you get it, all of your action-junkie boxes are checked.
Digital Trends - Giovanni Colantonio - 2.5 / 5 stars
Godfall's dazzling visuals and promising combat are held back by repetitive dungeon crawling.
EGM - Josh Harmon - 4 / 10
Godfall's sluggish, overly complicated combat, hilariously paper-thin story, and numerous technical issues make it a lowlight of the PlayStation 5's launch lineup.
Fextralife - Yuria - 7.5 / 10
While primarily Godfall is a fun game, if you're planning to play for solo content it may not be worth the full 60 USD at launch. Godfall mixes gameplay mechanics from a few popular titles, but doesn't do anything ground breaking. The game is great to play in co-op and will be best suited for those looking forward to multiplayer content.
Game Informer - Andrew Reiner - 7 / 10
Fun to play solo or with friends, but both avenues are filled with monotonous level design
GameSpot - Richard Wakeling - Unscored
Five hours with the looter-slasher from Counterplay Games shows that the game has potential.
GamesRadar+ - Leon Hurley - 3.5 / 5 stars
An enjoyable hack and slash looter that plays well despite a sparse, repeating structure
God is a Geek - Adam Cook - 8.5 / 10
Godfall is a massive surprise. It borrows combat from God of War and has enough loot to make Diablo blush. It may look garish but it's well designed and has that "one more go" factor.
IGN - Tom Marks - Unscored
I’m enjoying Godfall, even if it’s not doing much to wow me and the repetition of its missions is wearing a bit thin. It’s got some fun and satisfying combat, a few genuinely novel mechanics, and graphics that range from absolutely gorgeous to a little over the top – but unless its thin story morphs into more than an excuse to go stab stuff, the grindable action-looter structure doesn't seem like it has enough variety to sustain its otherwise expansive customization.
Metro GameCentral - 5 / 10
Although it seems to have all the necessary components to become a compelling looter-slasher Godfall's fussy mechanics and repetitive design will quickly sap your interest.
PC Invasion - Andrew Farrell - 7.5 / 10
It's derivative, only has three zones, and doesn't have much to offer besides its combat, but Godfall will be enjoyable to anyone who just wants a well-tuned, good-looking action RPG to slash their way through.
PCGamesN - Iain Harris - 5 / 10
Godfall's tried and trusted combat feels pleasant from moment-to-moment, but doesn't do enough to distract from an otherwise hollow experience.
Screen Rant - Maria Meluso - 3 / 5 stars
Godfall is an ambitious action RPG with gorgeous graphics and great combat mechanics that jump off the screen. Unfortunately, its repetitive locations and missions, lack of strong narrative, and uncompelling characters may fail to impress players and those factors prevent Godfall from living up to its potential.
Shacknews - Josh Hawkins - 7 / 10
If you want a fairly mindless RPG experience that offers some different weapons and gear to mess around with, then Godfall will give you at least a few hours of fun. Just don’t expect a fantasy story worthy of its inspirations, or a world that fully explores its potential and you’ll be fine.
TheGamer - Kirk McKeand - 2.5 / 5 stars
If you’re looking for another game like Anthem, this is that with swords. It might be wearing flashy armor, but its muscles are atrophied underneath.
TrustedReviews - Alastair Stevenson - Unscored
Godfall currently feels very familiar: it unashamedly borrows the loot system that made Destiny and Borderlands great, attempting to mix it with hardcore Souls-like melee combat.
In the first few hours, this makes the game feel a little dull. But the core mechanics feel well built and could act as a stable base for the game's more interesting character building and co-op dynamics, of which I've currently only scratched the surface.
Wccftech - Kai Powell - 7 / 10
While not our final score for Godfall, we're reserving the opportunity to adjust the tally for Godfall based on the endgame content. If it somehow redeems the lackluster loot that players will carve through during the campaign, that number might change. Otherwise, go into this one looking for some quality swordplay and subpar swords.

2020.11.11 03:57 RaverBoy408 25 [M4F] Bay Area dude shooting his shot

Hi Everyone! I’m a 5'10' 25m Latino from the bay area as the title says. COVID19 has destroyed my social and love life given how precautious I’ve been trying to avoid it. I have only seen two friends since March and that was recently done last month when I relaxed my COVID restrictions slightly. Besides that I have only gone to work, worked out a bit, and gone to the beach to just relax. Thankfully video games with friends (mainly Apex Legends) has kept me sane and somewhat in-touch socially besides the usual messaging on social media apps. However, I’m tired of being overly scared and want to open up the possibility of dating and making new friends. Reddit has always been a great site for me. Blessing me with some amazing people who have been my friends for years now. So I thought, why not try my luck at a potential partner or new cool friend? Wouldn’t hurt to try right c:
Intro: Well just to get something off my chest before I begin. I have been chronically ill since March of this year. The doctors have no idea wtf it is but my suspicion is that I'm one of the unlucky few who developed long covid. I work in healthcare so it only makes sense that I was exposed before most people and the symptoms I have line up too well. I'm a lot better than in the initial months but everyday is still a new struggle on whether I’ll feel fine or shitty. My energy levels vary through the day but thankfully I'm getting better slowly. And no I'm not infectious at all.
Anywho, who am I? I’d describe myself as a pretty good balance between a social goofball that gets along with pretty much anyone and an intellectual who craves deep and meaningful conversations. I love everything space and science related and actually plan to get a degree in Engineering or possibly physics/math in the future. I already have a degree in finance but don't plan to pursue anything in the field besides building on my knowledge and further learning how global economies function in real time. I’m a super affectionate person who loves cuddling, hugging, holding hands, ect…. Overall I cupcake no matter where I am with my S/O and am not ashamed of it. Because of this some partners tend to feel uncomfortable at first if they were never introduced to this level of affection. But over time I notice they quickly get used to it and actually become very affectionate people themselves. To be blunt I do have a dating preference for thinner women, but I'm open to everyone when it comes to friendship c:
Some hobbies I have are raving, boxing, watching FC Barcelona play, and video games. Raving is a huge aspect of my life and one of the few things in life that gives me pure happiness and freedom. I love getting lost in the sea of people that festivals bring. I’m always talking to everyone/anyone, making new friends from all over the US/World the more raves I go to. Never am I shy to compliment people on their outfits or totems. The music at shows makes me feel truly alive and touches my soul in ways I honestly can’t explain at times. #HouseMusicForTheKids Overall it sounds corny how I describe my love for raving, but when you experience the atmosphere for yourself and allow yourself to be immersed, you’ll see what I mean. Or you can at least see it in me when you see me dancing and enjoying heaven on earth. #PLUR .
Boxing is also a huge love for me. I recently stopped boxing last year because I kind of got burnt out from constantly pushing my body past its limit most days. Also getting punched when sparring every week gets to you after a while if you're not in a certain mentality to endure the punishment. Regardless of the sacrifices boxing demands, I love it and want to return once COVID is over and my body returns to its healthy state before my chronic illness issues started. Atm I’m constantly watching all the big fights and analyzing them like a boxing nerd.
FC Barcelona has been my team since I first became interested in soccer freshman year of highschool. I’ll watch the games with my dad and bond with him as the games rile up our emotions. Messi is my favorite player of course and he has brought a lot of happiness in my soccer viewing experience by being an absolute GOAT on the ball. #ViscaBarca
Video games weren't a huge aspect of my adult life until recently when Apex Legends came out and quarantine hit. I’d mostly just workout instead of gaming because boxing required it and because I find pride in a good strong body. When gaming I love being competitive. Most of my time now a days is spent coming home from work and unwinding by playing Apex Legends with my old coworker. We get really into it and play in the best lobbies ranked Apex can offer. So we constantly geek out when we're playing with the best pros north america has.
Now the main point of this post is to open up my chance at dating, but if things don’t work out I’m always down to just be friends. Friendship wise, I'm mainly on the lookout for more intellectual friends who are down to do things that don’t revolve around drinking/partyig. I’m growing out of my “I only want to party!” phase and want to do more civilized things. Things like hiking, painting, making music, adventuring to new places, ect… To make this post not drag on as much as it already has (I can go on forever about random things lol), I’ll stop it here. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or if you're interested in linking up. I can provide social media and talk it out before meeting in real life. Just want to emphasize that if we do meet up, I want to keep everything as COVID safe as possible.

Critic Reviews

But Why Tho? - Eva Herinkova - 9 / 10
Bugsnax has me thoroughly impressed. I have truly, madly, and deeply fallen in love with Snaktooth Island and its entertaining cast of characters. Chasing after Strabbys and Buffalocusts, bonding with the Grumpuses, and uncovering the mystery of Elizabert Megafig is an experience like no other. Not only is Bugsnax a brilliant launch title for the PlayStation 5, but a brilliant game in general that I cannot recommend enough. They’re kind of bug and kind of snack. What’s not to love?
COGconnected - Haley Perry - 90 / 100
The intriguing mysteries, colorful characters to befriend, and overall charm in everything from the voice acting to the design of the different Bugsnax makes this game a true winner. It vaguely feels like Pokémon for the new generation, and both children and adults will find a lot to love here. The controls are easy to master, the gameplay is superb, and there’s a lot to do on the reasonably-sized map. If you are what you eat, then I’m the happiest Cinnasnail this side of Snaktooth Island has ever seen.
Console Creatures - Steve Vegvari - Recommended
Bugsnax captures that Saturday morning cartoon feel. The absurdity that runs through the core of this game is enough to leave a lasting smile on your face. It often borders a line between an episode of Rick & Morty and Spongebob Squarepants. The creators at Younge Horses are off their rockers and I’m glad they have the freedom and drive to develop a game like Bugsnax.
Destructoid - CJ Andriessen - 7 / 10
It's been a while since I've played a game with a cast of characters that was so good it elevated the rest of the experience, but that's where I am with Bugsnax. Because they're brilliant. And the concept behind Snaktooth Island is equally brilliant. It's just the actual gameplay here, catching all those 'snax, isn't quite compelling enough to match that brilliance.
DualShockers - David Gill - 8.5 / 10
With its fun story and entertaining characters, Young Horses' Bugsnax is a charming game that shouldn't be missed -- whether you play on PS4 or PS5.
Eurogamer - Christian Donlan - Recommended
An island filled with critters is the setting for one of the more memorable games of the year.
Explosion Network - Dylan Blight - 8.5 / 10
The whole game oozes charm, heart and playing it just feels like a warm hug from start to finish.
Game Informer - Matt Miller - 7 / 10
Equal parts bizarre and good-hearted, Bugsnax is a breezy sequence of encounters and puzzles, but the continual errand structure of quests starts to feel like a chore
Game Revolution - Paul Tamburro - 3 / 5 stars
Bugsnax is an enjoyably dark mystery that deftly handles mental health issues with a superbly voice acted cast of entertaining characters, despite its shortcomings as an adventure game.
GameSkinny - David Jagneaux - 7 / 10 stars
Bugsnax is memorable for its writing, world, and creative premise, but its more gamified elements somewhat spoil a delicious meal.
GameSpew - Kim Snaith - 9 / 10
Bugsnax is a joyful, lovely experience from start to finish.
GameSpot - Mike Epstein - 8 / 10
Bugsnax' unique concept is so compelling you'll want to see and catch every one of its cute, crawling culinary creatures.
GameWatcher - Bogdan Robert Mateș - 7 / 10
Bugsnax is a feel-good adventure with a lovable cast, a rich variety of tasty prey to hunt, but thoroughly unremarkable gameplay.
GamesBeat - Mike Minotti - 3 / 5 stars
I applaud Bugsnax’s creativity. It’s not the most stimulating puzzle game, but it’s worth checking out if you can’t get that theme song out of your head
GamesRadar+ - Sam Loveridge - 4 / 5 stars
Bugsnax will be remembered for its brilliant crafted world, characters and titular Bugsnax for many years to come, despite some repetition and frustrating load times.
GamingTrend - David Burdette - 80 / 100
Bugsnax is an odd combination of Pokémon, a Cabela's hunting game, and Octodad. It's got a lot going for it in the fun gameplay, as well as a wonderful island filled with incredible creatures to discover. I do think the ending doesn't necessarily fit, and the backtracking is annoying, but it doesn't make the game unenjoyable. If you want the weirdest game of 2020 that's unusually entertaining, then pick up Bugsnax. Now if you'll excuse me, the Kero Kero Bonito song is stuck in my head again.
God is a Geek - Chris White - 9 / 10
Bugsnax offers thrilling gameplay with a poignant story about community and hope that continues to keep you engrossed throughout. The plethora of bugsnax are well-designed and different, allowing you to come up with various ways to catch them. and the colourful island of Snaktooth is a lot of fun to explore.
Hardcore Gamer - Kirstin Swalley - 4 / 5
Bugsnax is a relatively short title, taking roughly around ten hours or so to finish depending on if players go for full completion or not.
IGN - Simon Cardy - 8 / 10
Bugsnax is a puzzle-adventure packed full of charm, mystery and a surprising amount of emotional depth.
LevelUp - Pedro Pérez Cesari - Spanish - 8 / 10
Bugsnax is a charming and creative game that can goes beyond its meme status by respecting the player's intelligence with fun mechanics and an interesting plot. The game makes you think outside the box and let's you have fun catching weird animals. I hope that after its release, everyone starts talkin' 'bout Bugsnax
Metro GameCentral - 6 / 10
An ambitiously odd game that has an innovative take on Pokémon style gameplay and features some of the most intriguing characters of the year – but is rarely as much fun as it should be.
MonsterVine - Joe Bariso - 4 / 5
A weirdly moving love letter to community and found family hidden inside of a game about cute food bugs. I can’t recommend it enough.
PC Gamer - Tyler Wilde - 60 / 100
It's got well-observed characters and some genuinely weird moments, but the actual bug hunting isn't much fun.
PlayStation Universe - Adam Byrne - 8 / 10
Despite early fanfare very much focusing on Kero Kero Bonito's catchy theme song, and on just how outlandish a game the initial trailer seemed to show it as, the actual fact of the matter is Bugsnax is a real success, a game chockful of charm, wit, and plenty of heart - and one that revels in its eccentric trappings and delivers a meaningful adventure that'll ensure you never quite want to leave the inhabitants of Snacktooth Island after all.
Polygon - Charlie Hall - Unscored
Ultimately, it’s that modern-day Mr. Rogers moralism that saves Bugsnax in the end. I’d happily recommend it to any family, and to any parent looking for a few hours to themselves — either in front of the screen for a bit of casual gameplay, or in the next room while the kids enjoy it all on their own.
Press Start - Matthew Zimmari - 8 / 10
Whether it's the super-catchy theme song, the nostalgia-evoking gameplay, or simply the very basic fun of hunting new Snax to transform the Grumpuses, Bugsnax is a game that is well worth your time. Its simple yet addictive challenge of catching the cute yet strange creatures coupled with some wholesome storytelling delivers a well-rounded and fun adventure.
Push Square - Stephen Tailby - 7 / 10
Bugsnax is a strange concoction of elements that come together for a truly unique adventure. Finding and catching the titular creatures is great fun, but the gameplay is broken up by story beats that belie the game's simple, whimsical style. The mysterious narrative and memorable ensemble cast will keep you interested between hunting for snax, too. Despite loading screens interrupting the flow and a handful of repeated beasties, this curious game is an unusual blend of flavours that works wonderfully.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Steve Hogarty - Unscored
Bugsnax is a faintly naughty, but never crass adventure that feels simultaneously like a love letter to, and a sharply observed satire of, the games that inspired it.
Shacknews - Asif Khan - 9 / 10
There were several times during my playthrough that something happened to work out and I just laughed. Bugsnax is a game that challenges the player while allowing them to play at their own pace. Young Horses has tapped into the essence of what made their first title Octodad so special with this second game, and the result is a truly emotional ending to the story of the century.
Siliconera - Jenni Lada - 7 / 10
I think the best way I can describe Bugsnax is that it has strong launch day energy. This is absolutely the game people grab as a fun, quick palette cleanser as they move from, say, a Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to a Demon’s Souls.
TechRaptor - Cody Peterson - 6.5 / 10
Bugsnax is a very cute game that features a diverse cast of characters, but suffers from very repetitive gameplay.
TheSixthAxis - Nic Bunce - 9 / 10
Bugsnax is a unique and wonderful experience, and a must-play for anyone who can get their hands on it. If you're lucky enough to have secured a PS5, make sure you make the most of PlayStation Plus and pick up your free copy while it lasts. If not, this game is still well worth your hard-earned cash.
TrustedReviews - Jade King - 4 / 5 stars
Bugsnax is a strange, satisfying and utterly engrossing journey into another world – one that is never afraid to embrace its stranger side even if it means leaving your mouth agape in amazed confusion.
Twinfinite - Greysun Morales - 3.5 / 5
Bugsnax is an odd and wacky experience that’ll be remembered as the black swan of the PS5 launch lineup, in the best way possible. It highlights PlayStation’s commitment to having a diverse catalog of games at the PS5 launch, and with Bugsnax being free on PS Plus for PS5 players at launch, there’s no reason not to try it if you’re a subscriber.
USgamer - Mathew Olson - 4 / 5 stars
Bugsnax sees Young Horses building on the strange sense of humor it developed with Octodad while embracing some familiar, less adventurous gameplay hooks at its core. I let out an involuntary "aw" when I saw my first Kwookie scuttling across the ground, but the real heart of Bugsnax is its cast of lovable Grumpuses. It has great characters, an entertaining story, and all the Bugsnak catching is just varied enough to keep the experience interesting to its end. All that talk about Bugsnax over the past few months wasn't misguided: it's a flavor-blasted joy.
VG247 - Malindy Hetfeld - 4 / 5 stars
Bugsnax is a pleasant little gem of a game, but I don’t think I’ve ever encountered another title that came so close to ruining it all for me so close to the finish line.
WayTooManyGames - Todd Eggleston - 8 / 10
There is no reason not to visit this delightful world. Whether you focus on catching every single bugsnax available or mixing it with the mystery, wit, boss fights, charm and an overall system that appeals to adults while accessible to kids, it is a treat. Bugsnax is an excellent entry point to story driven narrative adventures.
Wccftech - Kai Powell - 7.5 / 10
The hunt for elusive Bugsnax is an interesting tale, requiring the patience of a fisherman and the experience of a Pokemon Snap master. This is one delicious adventure, though it might be an acquired taste for some.

2020.11.07 23:35 Santuric Hollowed Edition v1.3 update - Lots of changes and streamlining, and announcing the Hollowed Collection

Hollowed Edition v1.3

Hello everyone. I am back with an update to the Hollowed Edition ruleset, which sees several changes. The core theme of this update is streamlining and balance. Game setup should now be easier, rules have been streamlined (and made more challenging), and the document itself has been made more lightweight. In particular, all of the optional extension game modes have gotten their own documents, so they'll be easier to use, better looking, as well as touched up with new balance or content.
With this I am also announcing the Hollowed Collection, which is a folder of everything I make. This encompasses the ruleset, rules extensions, and custom content like new bosses. All of these can be used separately, or combined with other content of your choosing, and is also made with consideration to be used together as a whole. Keep an eye out for more additions as they get made!
To celebrate the launch of the collection, I have also added a new rules extension. Boss scaling! This extension allows you to up- and downscale bosses by providing consistent formulas for how to change stats like health, armor, damage and so on. Now you can make your own boss order. Keep in mind that it may not be full balanced, so I'd love to hear your results. This was made with help from u/sbalubba (DejaWho), who created the amazing companion app.
I hope you will all enjoy this update. It should be a tighter and more challenging game than ever before hopefully. As always, I welcome all feedback. Thanks to everyone who helped check and test the beta versions of this update.
Don't you dare go hollow.

Version 1.3 update notes

  • Added a table of contents.
  • The shop has been reworked into three decks based on item type (weapons/armomagic). This should be way easier to set up and understand.
  • Embers are now used to add a spark to the spark counter, and the spark counter is now the only way to revert hollowing. The ability to use them in combat has been removed.
  • Added a new alternative, procedural exploration mode. Original concept for this mode by u/cat_fuzz.
  • Separated rules extensions into their own separate documents.
  • Retired the reaction system, pending rework as a full extension on its own.
  • Codified game phases, early and late, which represent pre- and post first boss parts of the game. Doesn't change anything, but provides a shorthand term.
  • Restricted leveling in the early game phase.
  • Lowered soul gain overall.
  • Soul streaks are now broken if even a single player dies.
  • Rest is now a major action that restores all stamina.
  • Nerfed block and buffed dodge.
  • Reintroduced full healing when clearing a room.
  • All tokens now recharge on death.
  • Lowered cost to recharge coin and pendant tokens, and upped estus cost.
  • Tied tombstones to phantom summoning.
  • Barrels must now be kept intact to reward souls.
  • Split movement into walk and run, respectively a free and a minor action, to fit the system for clarity.
  • Removed the ability to infuse weapons with the same condition more than once.
  • Tweaked conditions to be more internally consistent.
  • Chests now give boss items from any tier of boss, not just your current tier.
  • Invaders now leave if even one player dies. "Host of embers defeated."
  • Many other small tweaks, typos, changes and corrections.

Well it's been a busy year for all of us, and in addition I've run in to my fair share of procrastination. I've also been tinkering with some new bosses and enemies, as well as a load of beta projects and feedback over on the discord. Moreover, lots of ideas have come and gone for Hollowed Edition, so I hope this version has turned out well and matured.
The aim of the ruleset is to provide a more refined and challenging experience of the game, without being radically different from it. Therefore, there may come a point where I feel like it is 'done', but I don't know when that will be. Other than that, I also work on custom content like new bosses and enemies, and I tinker with more radical overhauls that either add complex systems to the game, or completely overhaul it.
Yes, that is the intent. I will still make threads on here and BGG when I feel it's appropriate, and I'm sure the Forbidden Library might add my stuff too.
You're very welcome to reply to this thread with feedback or suggestions, send me a PM, or join us over on the discord server (check the subreddit megathread for a link). I welcome all feedback, and almost everything I've gotten so far has improved or added to the ruleset.
Anywhere you like! We also have an amazing environment for creators over on the discord, where we all share our projects, brainstorm ideas, and give each other feedback. Anyone is welcome to join.

But it's certainly no less impressive. That intimacy lends itself perfectly to a story about a vibrant, tight-knit community with a rich and storied history; a story about gentrification and misguided attempts to "fix" things that aren't broken; a story about a mixed-race kid looking for his place in a world that always seems to see him as "other", and finding that place in the welcoming, open arms of Harlem.
EGM - Josh Harmon - 10 / 10
Don't be fooled into thinking Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is some minor spin-off of Insomniac Games' PS4 exclusive. Sure, it's not as long, but the experience is packed with enough new gameplay ideas and design refinements that it feels every bit like a true, substantial successor. Throw in a story that does justice to Miles as a character and tech that wonderfully showcases the power of the PlayStation 5, and you just might have one of the best console launch titles of the modern era.
GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 10 / 10
Perhaps I’ve been dismissive of Spider-Man: Miles Morales in calling it a standalone expansion, because while it may indeed be shorter than Insomniac’s first Spider-Man outing, it’s not just a simple continuation of the story designed to wring out a bit more moolah from your wallet. Think of it as a more focused sequel instead, as that’s what it actually feels like. It’s free of story bloat, and the gameplay has most definitely been expanded upon and improved. Plus, since when has an expansion looked so much nicer than the game it’s building upon? This is a timely release that demonstrates the power of the PS5 with style, and if you aren’t picking it up alongside your console, you’re simply doing things wrong.
GamingTrend - Ron Burke - 100 / 100
With flawless lighting, excellent gameplay, innovative immersion, and a fresh new story, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the sort of game that we'll be talking about for the rest of the console generation. This is how you start a new generation of gaming.
Impulsegamer - Andrew Bistak - 5 / 5
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is indeed the must have title for the PlayStation 5 that successfully brings this character to life on this next-gen console with some stunning graphics and flawless gameplay. Just like a comic but better as you're the star!
PowerUp! - Leo Stevenson - 9.7 / 10
It might not be the brand-new, system selling experience we're used to getting at the launch of a new console, but Spider-man Miles Morales is an incredibly good game and a must-play.
Digital Chumps - Nathaniel Stevens - 9.5 / 10
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a wonderful launch title for the PlayStation 5. It has everything you want from a Spider-Man game and a unique story that could be considered Hollywood-caliber.
Geek Culture - Jake Su - 9.5 / 10
When it comes to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it is all about love, a labour of dedication and design that will no doubt garner fans aplenty in the days ahead.
God is a Geek - Adam Cook - 9.5 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales manages to improve on the fantastic game that came before it. Insomniac Games continue to be on fire with perhaps their best game ever.
Stevivor - Steve Wright - 9.5 / 10
Spider-Man Miles Morales is a tight little package that provides a thrilling Spider-Man experience, trimmed of nonessential fat and full of emotion and excitement.
COGconnected - Paul Sullivan - 92 / 100
Though it’s not as polished as the 2018 original, Spider-Man Miles Morales is a smashing success. It looks sensational and is an absolute riot to play. Miles’ story brings all the drama and feels it needs to, and highlights a community outside what’d normally be on the drawing board for a game like this. Despite some bugginess, this is the game you want to show off your impressive new hardware. I can guarantee I’ll be slinging from Harlem to Hell’s Kitchen daily for the foreseeable future.
Attack of the Fanboy - Josh Garibay - 4.5 / 5 stars
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a thrilling, albeit brief, ride with the most compelling Spider-Man yet.
Destructoid - Chris Carter - 9 / 10
Just like Into the Spider-Verse, I was pleasantly surprised by Miles Morales. I came in fully expecting it to be a side story, but it was much more than that. If this is setting us up for Spider-Man 2 where both Miles and Peter are playable: I'm in.
Digital Chumps - Alex Tudor - 9 / 10
Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS4 is fun, frantic, and full of heart. While not as large in scope as 2018's Spider-Man, Miles Morales continues to build upon the world Insomniac has crafted to deliver a heartfelt story about a kid in Harlem just trying to deal with the responsibility of balancing being a hero with protecting his family. Miles Morales doesn't add a ton to the formula, nor does it need to. Swinging through New York is just as fun as it was in 2018, and some of Miles' new Venom powers allow him to feel different than Peter Parker. You're not going to get all the bells and whistles the PS5 version offers, but the story itself is a must-play.
Easy Allies - Brandon Jones - 9 / 10
Review Copy Provided by PlayStation Miles Morales and the PlayStation 5 are both ready for their big debut, eager to show people what they're made of. The campaign is shorter than the first game, but the map is still full of stories and skirmishes worthy of an amazing hero.
Game Informer - Andrew Reiner - 9 / 10
Not as long as the previous entry, but better streamlined. The Spider-Man action is superb, but the threat Miles faces isn't as interesting or potent
Game Rant - Anthony Taormina - 4.5 / 5 stars
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an exceptional follow-up to Marvel's Spider-Man, even if a lot of the formula feels familiar. On PS5, though, it is a must-play just to see the potential of the new hardware and what it will offer from both a visual and a performance standpoint. For many console gamers, this will be their first taste of steady 4K 60FPS or Ray-Tracing that adds meaningful improvements to the presentation. Insomniac's work on the game is stunning.
Gaming Nexus - John Yan - 9 / 10/)
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales shines on the PlayStation 5 with great graphics, solid gameplay, and excellent use of the new DualSense controller for a seriously fun game to play on the brand new console.
IGN - Jonathon Dornbush - 9 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a fantastic follow-up, telling a wonderful story while improving upon the fundamentals of the first game.
Inverse - Corey Plante - 9 / 10
For anyone who loved Spider-Man on PS4 and Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales will exceed even your wildest expectations.
Siliconera - Jenni Lada - 9 / 10
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the hero we’re looking for. The game takes everything people loved about Marvel’s Spider-Man, the story, the collecting, and the smooth fighting, and presents us with a story that somehow feels more balanced and dedicated to its star.
Spiel Times - Caleb Wysor - 9 / 10
“Miles Morales” is one of the year’s best escapist entertainments, replete with stand-out combat, an engaging story and a well-designed open world.
USgamer - Mike Williams - 4.5 / 5 stars
The early heroic career of Miles Morales gets some shine in this standalone soft sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4. Web swinging is still fantastic and the combat system expands with Miles' more varied powerset. And while you might have played most of this game before, Insomniac does an amazing job telling the story of its version of Miles. Rooted in his new home of Spanish Harlem, he's probably the most "friendly neighborhood" of any version of Spider-Man.
Video Chums - A.J. Maciejewski - 8.9 / 10
Without a doubt, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a much more enjoyable game than the original and it shows off PS5's performance brilliantly. It's too bad that it isn't longer because I loved every minute of it.
Cerealkillerz - Gabriel Bogdan - German - 8.6 / 10
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is not quite a Spider-Man 2 but it comes pretty close. If you can live with a lot of similar tasks, enemies and easy to see through story twists you'll get here a well made Adventure in the Spider-Man Universe that gives a great inside on the man behind the mask and his struggles.
GamePro - Hannes Rossow - German - 86 / 100
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a nice spin-off, that expands the template meaningfully and puts more heart and soul into the story. - Michał Mańka - Polish - 8.5 / 10
Miles Morales is an interesting enough character to carry an entire game by himself. Not because it’s shorter than the original, but because the story is good and the voice actor did a fantastic job. Despite finishing MM on a review copy of both the game and the new PlayStation, I’m sure I’ll play the new Spider-Man again in my private time.
GameBlast - Alexandre Galvão - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales stands out for further highlighting one of the best PS4 games in an excellent expansion of the universe created by Insomniac in 2018. What was already good has been maintained and certain features have been improved. With impeccable presentation and an excellent adventure, its only problem is still being at the mercy of its predecessor when it comes to innovation.
GameZone - Cade Onder - 8.5 / 10
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the end of one generation and the start of another. It serves as yet another defining title for PlayStation but also an essential story for Marvel's greatest hero. With new innovations in Spidey gameplay as well as loads of refinement and a wildly impactful story, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the game we need right now.
PSX Brasil - Ivan Nikolai Barkow Castilho - Portuguese - 85 / 100
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is relatively short, but it is still exceptional. Miles' gameplay manages to be different enough from Peter, even though the base of both is similar. The story is interesting, but a little predictable and much less "epic". Despite these points, it is an excellent addition to the PS4 (and now PS5) library.
Press Start - Adam Mathew - 8.5 / 10
For a launch title, the worth of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is undeniable. It offers an expensive-TV-justifying visual feast – not to mention a tantalising "What Dreams May Come" glimpse at the sugar encrusted future of eye-candy. (Console hasn't even launched yet and I can feel my eyes getting the diabeetus.) Likewise, it delivers super-fast load times and an immersive, tactile DualSense experience you simply can't 'feel' anywhere else.
The Games Machine - Stefano Calzati - Italian - 8.5 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales certainly does not reinvent the original work, but manages to tell a particularly intense story by introducing and deepening an extremely positive character with an overwhelming personality. More compact than Peter Parker's adventure, with an elegantly told political subtext and a warm family dimension that comes to protect at all costs, the Insomniac work then explodes in exploiting what PS5 has to offer from a technical point of view, between impressive lighting that benefits from ray tracing and a world instantly loaded thanks to the potential of the SSD, which practically eliminates pop-up , giving a fluidity to the action, a breath at the stairs and an absolutely breathtaking overall visual impact.
Wccftech - Kai Powell - 8.5 / 10
Miles Morales is a far more charismatic hero than Peter in Parker in Marvel's Spider-Man and there's no better way to tell his story than with his own game as a PlayStation 5 launch title. While shorter and more compact than Peter Parker's adventures, this quick trip to Harlem should be on any superhero fan's wishlist.
Worth Playing - Redmond Carolipio - 8.5 / 10
My only real gripe about Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is that I wish there were more of it. Miles and the rest of his circle are absolutely capable of being compelling enough to carry a game for twice the length. I just like this kid, and I think a lot of other people will, too.
IGN Spain - David Soriano - Spanish - 8.2 / 10
Despite its length, Marvel's Spider-man: Miles Morales is a great launch game for PS5 and a perfect example of the potential of the machine in the hands of the members of PlayStation Studios.
Daily Mirror - JC Suttun - 4 / 5 stars
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a more focused and concise outing than its predecessor. It lands somewhat in the Uncharted: Lost Legacy mould of a shorter experience that does away with filler, and meaningful moments interspersed with less gumpf. While there's not a huge amount of reinvention, Miles Morales is a fantastic superhero experience that does enough to feel like a worthy follow-up.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (version tested) for £49.99 - Panagiotis Petropoulos - Greek - 8 / 10
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a worthy successor to the 2018 game, due to Insomniac’s enriched Marvel’s Spider-Man formula with some interesting systems and delivered an equally interesting (although much shorter) campaign. - Francesco Fossetti - Italian - 8 / 10
Nothing new for those who have already worn the Spider-Man costume on PS4, but Insomniac always remains a guarantee of great quality.
Game Revolution - Mack Ashworth - 4 / 5 stars
For $50, players are getting 7-9 hours of story missions, combined with the optional 10+ hours of side content, much of which is collectible hunting. That doesn’t strike me as a great deal at launch, but the free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 does help soften the blow. When the price is right for you, this PlayStation exclusive comes with my recommendation, as it further bolsters Sony’s arsenal as we enter the next generation and beyond.
GamesRadar+ - Leon Hurley - 4 / 5 stars
A brilliant but all too brief sample of Miles Morales' superhero life.
Guardian - Keith Stuart - 4 / 5 stars
This Spiderverse-inspired take on Spider-Man has a new hero and an appealing message reflecting America's vibrant diversity
Hardcore Gamer - Kevin Dunsmore - 4 / 5
Marvel's Spider-Man perfectly revitalized the Spider-Man gaming franchise back in 2018 and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an excellent follow-up.
Kakuchopurei - Kenn Leandre - 80 / 100
Just like Miles in the comics, Spider-Man: Miles Morales does not try to out-do an already established name. Rather, it carves a new story for themselves in a familiar-but-comforting setting.
Metro GameCentral - 8 / 10
A far better advert for the PS5 than its short length and last gen assets might have suggested, with superior storytelling and more compelling characters than the original.
Nerdburglars - Dan Hastings - 8 / 10
If you enjoyed the last game, you will definitely enjoy this one. Being in control of Spiderman is a delight in every single way. Fast travel is a forgotten mechanic as you won't want to waste an opportunity to travel via web-slinging. With such a strong foundation and a rock-solid game that came before it, Miles Morales had some high expectations. In many ways, it delivered what you would want from a Spiderman adventure. It falls short with a weaker lineup of villains and a less interesting story. Marvel's Spiderman was just too good.
PCMag - Will Greenwald - 4 / 5 stars
Spider-Man: Miles Morales kicks off the PlayStation 5's launch by putting you in the web shooters of the titular new Spider-Man in a satisfying side story that covers much of the same terrain as its predecessor. - Wojciech Gruszczyk - Polish - 8 / 10
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an interesting spin-off that shows a young superhero and is an excellent forecaster of the possibilities of the new generation. A new Spider-Man is born before our eyes.
Push Square - Sammy Barker - 8 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is effortlessly cool. The overall gameplay structure may prove samey for those who failed to fall in love with Insomniac Games' previous effort, but everyone else will have a blast with this generous spin-off story. Great characters, tons of activities, and some epic set-piece moments round out a must play superhero romp – and with the developer on this kind of form, we can't wait to see more of the full-scale sequel that it's inevitably cooking up. - Matúš Štrba - Slovak - 8 / 10
Miles Morales presents his more personal story as a young Spider-Man trying prove himself as New York's hero. But the game recycles too much of the original's content and consept.
Screen Rant - Nicholas Straub - 4 / 5 stars
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales fumbles its well-intentioned story by failing to challenge Miles and adequately address its complex context, but it is still an enthralling experience. The campaign is filled with memorable gameplay and the open-world exploration successfully expands upon the successes of the original game. It also sets the stage for Miles to become the face of the franchise, and perhaps his story will be better told in a full-fledged game rather than a shorter jaunt through his origins.
Shacknews - Chris Jarrard - 8 / 10
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will appeal to loads of gamers and I suspect it will be a hit for PlayStation owners this holiday season. While there isn’t as much to do this time around and what is included is mostly recycled, the asking price is lower than normal. Being Spider-Man is still as fun as it was in 2018 (and potentially more fun now at 60Hz) and Miles Morales is a character that is more compelling than Peter Parker. Should the few technical hiccups get sorted out, this will be a solid inclusion for any game library. Anyone grabbing a PS5 at launch would do well to grab a copy.
Spaziogames - Stefania Sperandio - Italian - 8 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales doesn't even try to reinvent the wheel, but it's enjoyable and well packed.
TheSixthAxis - Jim Hargreaves - 8 / 10
Spider-Man: Miles Morales feels like more of a sequel than it is a stopgap, entangling players within its web of cleverly refined mechanics while delivering some familiar web-slinging thrills. A heroic technical showcase for PS5 owners picking up their consoles on day one, this meaty side story in the Spider-Man saga has us even more excited than before to see what Insomniac Games have planned next.
TrustedReviews - Jade King - 4 / 5 stars
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a brilliant expansion of Insomniac's beloved superhero adventure from 2018. It shows why Miles Morales is, arguably, the franchise's greatest strength, while also proving how much of an impact the next generation will have on visuals and performance. If you're picking up a PS5, this is essential.
VG247 - Alex Donaldson - 4 / 5 stars
Launch games are rarely remembered as earth-shattering experiences years later, but at the time, elements of them always feel magical. On PS5, Miles Morales has both of these feelings down – it’s familiar and unsurprising, but some of its technical presentation will wow you nevertheless. If you’re picking up a PS5 on launch day, for that reason this will surely do.
VideoGamer - Josh Wise - 8 / 10
The developer, Insomniac Games, has a similar storytelling confidence to that of Naughty Dog-a natural cinematic ease, bolstered by money and technology, which gives equal weight to ground-level struggles as to those beyond the rooftops.
WellPlayed - Kieron Verbrugge - 8 / 10
Miles Morales is a worthy standalone addition to Insomniac's excellent Spider-Man game and a compelling part of the PlayStation 5 launch lineup, even if it does seem a little pricey
New Game Network - Alex Varankou - 76 / 100
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales offers a fun story in a streamlined adventure that builds on the great foundation of its predecessor, despite a few performance issues on the PS4.
Gadgets 360 - Akhil Arora - 7 / 10
If the sticker price isn't a concern, in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you'll find a game that is lacking in originality but thankfully built on a solid core that needs a few tweaks. It's a successful expansion of Insomniac's Spider-Man universe, but it's a new paragraph, rather than a new chapter. Hopefully it will give us the latter next time around. And though it's also good for representation, it still has a ways to go. (Though the game wasn't anything special, Marvel's Avengers gave us a Muslim-American lead in Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel.) Hopefully we can get Spider-Gwen from Insomniac next, or a Spider-Verse game, though given the lack of setup, either seems unlikely. For now, Miles continues his upward trajectory. He walked in 2018, so he could fly in 2020.
GameSpot - Jordan Ramée - 7 / 10
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales sticks a bit too close to its predecessor in terms of mechanics, but manages to stand on its own through its story and characters.
Washington Post - Christopher Byrd - 70 / 100
I’d wager that Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be remembered as the year’s most ingratiating family-friendly video game. It is a feel-good, unabashed spectacle that controls well, looks great and has a hyper-efficient story line that never tries to overdeliver.
We Got This Covered - Shaan Joshi - 3.5 / 5 stars
While it does little to move the needle for the series as a whole, Spider-Man: Miles Morales both plays the part of a much-needed stopgap and serves as a technical showcase of what the PlayStation 5 can bring to the table.
Telegraph - Dan Silver - 3 / 5 stars
With greater console power comes greater responsibility (and much faster loading times)
ACG - Jeremy Penter - Buy
"Miles is fantastic as an expansion to the Spiderman Universe on Playstation"
Ars Technica - Kyle Orland - Unscored
Buy it if you want an "expansion pack" sequel with an interesting story and solid, familiar gameplay.
Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - Recommended
Everything about this game oozes style, Nadji Jeter is the definitive version of Miles Morales thanks to his goofy and geeky take on the web-slinger. Soaring through the Highrise buildings of New York City has never looked better and the extra power of the PlayStation 5 makes things feel more alive than ever before
Eurogamer - Martin Robinson - Recommended
A standalone expansion for 2018's excellent original, with enhanced action and an irresistible new lead.

Miles Morales excels in its smallest moments, and I wish it had the confidence to stand by them to the end.
Polygon - Tauriq Moosa - Unscored
What makes Miles an important hero for the world of 2020 is not his successes, his abilities, his fighting moves, or even his moral compass to do good: It’s his belief in himself and others that we can rise above this. That’s also his mother’s central focus for her political campaign. Miles has a relentless, if sometimes naïve, belief in others’ goodness. He wants to help the city and neighborhood he loves. And watching him try, watching his small victories, and playing through it with such beautiful animations — with nods to Into the Spider-Verse — became one of my few joys in this dark-as-shit year.

2020.11.05 19:53 FuckmedaddyBismarck Those Tempered by the fire - ch 1: The devil went down to a god damn space ship

“The Devil went down to Georgia. He was looking for a soul to steal. He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind. He was willing to make a de-” Shit did someone say my name?
I looked around the Terminal and saw a tanned woman in a TIN uniform walking towards me. I pulled up the email that Naval command had sent me-
“You will report at..” yada yada not important, uhhhh... ah, There we go “... be received by Lieutenant commander Sedna Wilson. Description: of Native American descent, black hair, 6 '7.”
The description looks like it matches, I-am good-to-go. I gave a quick wave to show that I heard her, grabbed my duffel, and started walking.
“Dr. Finch, It is a pleasure to meet you. I’m thrilled that we’ll have someone of your capabilities assisting us out there in the void. Although, I am a tad surprised, as this is certainly the first time I’ve heard of a Fleet advisor being as…” She paused, “highly qualified as you are.”
I cringed a little, she probably thought it was a waste of resources to have someone not specifically trained for the job.
“Yeah, the Admiralty figured that, due to the moderately experimental nature of the new ship, combined with the antics at the battle of the crazy 8, it would be worth the sacrifice of military training to have someone more experienced within the field.”
“Well, we’ll certainly find out.” She said, a tight smile following her words.
“Come on, the hangar we landed in is not far.”
It wasn’t until we started walking side by side that I noticed the physical disparity between the two of us. Now, I was not the most muscular of people, so I was used to being moderately outclassed, even by someone riding the navy’s minimum fitness line (not that she didn’t meet that line- in fact, she exceeded it). However, despite the red hair and pale skin, I was no leprechaun and at 6’1, I was used to being either slightly taller or equal height to most people. The 6in difference between us hit me kind of hard.
She was right, and we quickly reached the hangar. I looked across the open floor at the craft that would take me to my new job aaaaaand I couldn’t help but geek out a little. It was a type 98 landing craft, one of my favorite pieces of engineering to come out of the ol’ imperial shipyards. But if I got started on that topic, we’d most likely be here until the next model came out.
We walked across the hangar and entered the ship. I stowed my duffel and we sat down across from each other- the craft took off and we were on our way.
“So, the pilot said it would take about 6hrs to get there, so let’s go over some things and make sure we’re on the same page.”
She pulled up a tablet, presumably to pull up notes. I took the opportunity to shift my gaze from her to looking around the passenger area. Frankly, it was exhausting keeping up eye contact for that long, but most people don’t understand that not looking at someone doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not paying attention to them. Maybe their face is boring, maybe there’s a cute dog. I also took the opportunity to force my jaw to unclench, keep my leg from bouncing, and make sure my brain understood that now was absolutely not a time to whistle, hum, or make noise in general. In my experience, people lose confidence in you if you appear very nervous (not that those habits were specific nerves based, but they were exacerbated by the fact that I was going to a brand new work setting and that one of my peers was already suspicious of my value). Fun.
“There we are.”
My attention snapped back to her (more specifically trying to decide whether to focus on one of her eyes, some point in the middle or some other point in space somewhere near her so that it didn’t look like I was staring her down. I decided on a point just behind her head).
“Alright, let’s go over the job description, as this isn’t exactly a standard posting.”
I watched her look down at the tablet.
“As the Fleet scientific advisor, your job will be to help the fleet deal with any anomalies that come up in space. In addition to this, your expertise will be called upon to understand alien technology and its intricacies. You will also be working with other departments, such as engineering and navigation, to improve the function of the ship and fleet.” She paused to crack her neck.
“Those are the standard parts of your job. However, as you are substantially more educated than someone normally filling this position, your expertise in spatial warp, ie capital ship propulsion systems, and trans-dimensional based technologies, ie capital ship shielding, FTL travel, and your experience in high-energy projectile systems, ie rail guns, will be called upon to assist the functioning of the fleet however you can.”
She looked up.
“Basically just supplement the Tinnies’ (nickname for the Terran Imperial Navy) overall lack of brain cells.” A little grin cracked across her face. The Lieutenant Commander seemed impressed with her own joke.
“Yeah,” I started, “that sounds about right. From my understanding, the extended position and duties are supposed to be a bit nebulous. I’m pretty sure that the admiralty just noticed this ship was new and a tad experimental, and that I had worked on the design. They must have shoved me on to see if I could iron out some bugs, improve efficiency, or do something similar to what happened at Crazy 8.” In all honesty, I was probably going to be spending most of my time working with navigation (shaping shields for FTL) and while I did find that enjoyable, it hopefully wouldn’t be the only thing I was doing.
She nodded her head. “Probably. Anyways, just to wrap it up, as an FSA you will be given the rank equivalent to that of Lieutenant commander. That being said, in most active combat situations you’ll be overridden by any of the bridge or similar officers. In all non-combat situations, you’ll be entitled to the full rights afforded by your position, although your duties will remain consistent with your actual job. As is afforded by an officer of your rank, you will receive your own room and priority dining. You’ll have two primary work areas: a station on the bridge, and a laboratory.“ She set the tablet down.
“Finally that’s over. We have about six hours until we arrive. Feel free to rest up and relax until we get there.”
After a couple of hours, LC Wilson saw that I was still awake. She decided to reinitiate the conversation.
“So, where are you from?”
“I was born and raised on Hearth but I moved to Mars when I was 15, where I went to college. I’ve lived and worked in Sol ever since. What about you?”
“I’m a Gaia brat myself,” I saw a little bit of a gleam in her eyes as she continued, “it was amazing being able to grow up with a taste of what earth was really like. Being able to interact with all the animals is a truly unique experience.”
We spent a little bit of time talking about our homes, some interests, and just generally getting to know each other better. After a little bit in the conversation, her tone shifted a little.
Her demeanor changed back to the focused posture from the beginning of our conversation, “Dr. Finch, can I be frank with you for a second?”
“Sure?” Even with my sub-par people skills, I was able to detect the cut-throat tone in her voice. I was a little worried, the last time someone had started a sentence with that they had told me I was a selfish maggot who didn’t even become close to being worth the trouble; thanks, mom.
“Well to be perfectly honest, I have no idea what you are actually going to bring to the team that would make it worth all the hassle of installing a laboratory and coming all this way out to get you?”
Gotta admit I’m a little stung, we had just started to become friendly with each other. But I can understand that a lot of people don’t know enough about the madness behind ship systems to really understand what someone like me can bring to the table.
“Off the top of my head, shield geometry.” I reached into my bag for my mini- holoprojector. I had planned for this situation (and a few others, so what if I over-prepare a little?) If I and another person end up needing to explain why the Bear-analogs on Hearth are granted freedom of speech and they don’t have a pre-made presentation to take out, who would look dumb then, hmmm?
I pulled up my presentation and plugged the 98 Into the simulation. “Take this ship for example, when this model was created it used a different hull shape than the previous models did. This meant that it was more visible to enemy scanners but it allowed for a vast improvement in the efficiency of its shield geometry, allowing it to do power shunting and either make it way faster, powerful, or durable. That made it so much more versatile and useful. That’s why I think that it serves as a great reminder of the importance of a proper shield design. On a capital ship, it’s a little different- the hulls of capital ships are designed with dimensional shields, like the ones we use for large craft, in mind. So they are already calibrated for a general shape that will perform average in as many circumstances as possible. Now what most people don’t know is that the way you cut through Super-space currents is directly affected by even the small shifts in geometry that can be accomplished by a skilled person without any hull changes. This can decrease travel times and ripple patterns greatly. There are other benefits to being able to realign shields on the fly, but that’s just one off the top of my head.”
Wilson looked at my diagram, seemingly impressed she said, “Wow, I didn’t know that. I guess you may be useful after all.”
She chuckled at her own joke and I gave a smile. We both went back to our own things and in almost no time at all, we had arrived.
There she is, The TSS Galàn. In all her glory, the first of her kind and the first ship classified as a Battle-carrier ever built by human hands. A new beginning. Surrounded by her squadron of 3 cruisers, 4 frigates, and 6 corvettes, she looked like a goddess with her loyal attendants in tow.
The next hour or so passed in a blur. The lieutenant commander showed me around the ship and sweet mother it was sensory overload to the max, too many names(thank Morgan freeman and all gods that have ever or will ever exist for name tags), too many things to pay attention to, too many noises, too many smells. It. Was. Too. Much. I needed to get just 10 minutes(preferably a week) to myself and just de-stimulate. And then it came, after being introduced to the bridge staff, the engineering crew, and being shown around to the important areas, I was finally shown to my quarters and told that I had a little bit and should unpack and start getting acclimated to ship time.
I took out my noise-canceling headphones (thankfully synced to the ship's intercom so that if there were any messages for me I could still hear them), put them on my head, and landed face-first into my surprisingly comfortable mattress.
I woke a few hours later to a message telling me to report to the bridge in 30mins. I freshened up a little bit, and I was on my way in 5. When I made it to the bridge I simply could not get over it. Here I was on a warship, not only that but it was one I was serving on as a senior member and I had helped design! I took in the glory of the pitted oval that was the bridge, each section had a lead who sat on the main level, in a horseshoe shape around the captains and First officer’s chairs, then each section had a slightly lowered portion where the other bridge staff would sit so they could communicate with their lead and be able to see the main viewing screen in the front without blocking anyone behind them. I sat back and to the right from the captain, in between the defense and navigation sections. I had no support staff so I was given the luxury of a larger console, take that- other more important departments.
As we drew closer to the announcement the bridge was filled with an almost palpable sense of excitement. Finally, the captain rose and the holo presence of the captains of the squadron and the ships AI’s filled the bridge. At last, she spoke, “Alright people listen up, I’ll make this quick so we can get down to business. As our first mission, we will be dealing with reports of pink beards pirate fleet setting up bases of operation in Musteler space. The admiralty has made it clear that because of the rising tensions with the Phyrnceane they need as many able-bodied people here and ready to act. We need to be quick, brutal, and effective in dealing with these pirates so we can get back here and defend our people. I know this is a new squadron, but everyone here must trust each other. We are a team now, and I know that you all have it within yourselves to be the best damn sailors this navy has ever and will ever see. So let’s get this done.”
A resounding and enthusiastic call of “Aye aye captain” went out and we got to work.
Alright, this is my first attempt at something a bit more long-form and dialogue-based so IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED if you told me what you think. Was it good? What about it made you want to remove your eyeballs in pain? I am a very new writer so any input is very very welcome. Also please tell me if you want more. If people seem interested I'll be sure to continue! Thanks!

Hi there, you can call me Farmer. I literally grow food for a living, and so have most of my ancestors. I live at peace with the world around me, and actively try to make this world a better place. I'm also going through a wicked divorce, but I won't talk bad about her, and have kids. If that is too much burden, I get it, and that's totally cool.
I'm not very good at talking about myself. I'm Scandinavian, shedding a dad bod one day at a time, with an unabashed geek at heart that is tied together by a hippy soul.
I love life and experiences. I place value on time spent, not monetary value. If I had a personal theme song, it would be the A Perfect Circle cover of Imagine. The original is great, but I just don't....feel it...quite the same. Does that make sense? Horror, sci-fi, fantasy....all my jam. Want to talk Supernatural, X-Files, or anything by Joss Whedon? I'm your huckleberry. Board games, table top rpgs, podcasts, pro-wrestling, and whatever you're into too. I'm all about it.
I also have this big dream of moving off the grid. Build my own tiny house, big gardens, sustainable living practices, renewable energy sources, animal husbandry (sorry, can't quite go vegan yet), and just live in harmony. I'm a jack-of-all-trades, and am always trying to learn more useful skills. To be fair, that also comes with farming.
If anything I've said so far resonates with you, or if you just want to have a conversation with someone from a different walk of life, I'd love to hear from you. My favorite crop that I grow is hemp. Wonderful and versatile. If you include "hemp" in your title, I'll know that you gave me an honest read. That would be....outstanding!
